The description was really good but not 2 detailed. He left some aspects to the imagination. *Sniff* It was great. *Weeps and bangs head on desk.*
I loved the Bartimaeus books but, like all trilogies, it was way too short.

The whole point of the Other Place is that they don't. They're all mixed into one, with the swirling undefined energy. Spirits aren't like humans in that they need to be doing stuff - in the Other Place, they just are.

The other place sounds like a mistranslation of Hesiods theogony.Chaos ruled before the world was created and it was a huge pouring space where the elements mixed freely.

Err... might be similar, but probably not a mistranslation.

Time can also appear to run at different speeds - Einstein: 'If you sit on a hot stove for a minute, it seems like an hour. If you sit with a nice girl for an hour, it seems like a minute.'
That's the closest we can come to understanding time in the Other Place.

If a spirit isn't summoned, it isn't defined from the rest of the Other Place, and so has no conciousness.
I'm late too, but that's not unusual.

It sounds to me like you're saying each being has no consciousness unless summoned. They have no grasp of whatever is beyond their great amalgomation of energies. In the other place it's impossible to differentiate between energies.

If this is true then how was Barti able to contact Ptolemy and Kitty directly? Moreover, how was he able to define himself in this place and define a pseudo-surrounding for Kitty when he was speaking with her?

I think that each energy in The Other Place has a clear sense of self, for lack of better description, but they're all joined as one. Each one is aware, on some level, but they choose not to act on that awareness.

I don't think it's possible not to be conscious, on some level, before being summoned. If that were true then there's no telling who you'd summon, since the consciousness (extending to names) would only exist once the being was summoned.

Ok, I think I sufficiently confused myself.

OK; point being Stroud thought: "What would a big ball of chaos be like?" and to hell with the concequenes. So don't try. Confrint dear Jonathan wth it.

I meant that unless a bit of energy is summoned, it isn't defined and therefore isn't a consciousness. Once it's been summoned, even if it gets returned to the other place, it's defined and exists.

when bartimeaus talked about the "gentle gravity of the other place", how could gravity exist in pure chaos :new:

I think he's referring to the force keeping him in the Other Place, as opposed to gravity as attraction to heavy objects.

Yes. You're making things up without any supportive evidence. Stroud has the final word.

I'm not making things up, I'm providing an explanation that would make sense based on that quote and the rest of the books.
