What do you think of the Other Place? I heard that it's filled with perpetual chaos and swirling energies :o
I dont remember that, but it is a very realistic theory to the trillogy.Nathaniel wrote: POSSIBLE SPOILER:
doesn't he say in the third book that the magicians would use some spells to locate a piece of 'the Other Place' and summon that and then give it a name which he is then tied to for eternity. So he didn't have a name when he was first summoned but now has the name Bartimaeus becaue of the magician who summoned him first

Bartimaeus in 'Ptolemy's Gate' wrote:Names, names, names! Now they're the ultimate restriction. They're the worst curse of all. Each one is a sentence of slavery. Here we are one - we have no names. But what do the magicians do? They reach in with their summons; their words draw us out, peice by screaming peice. As each peice passes through, it is defined: it gains a name and powers of its own, but is seperated from the rest. What happens then? Like performing monkeys, we do tricks to please our masters, lest they hurt our fragile essence. Even when we return here we are never safe. Once a name has been bestowed we can be called again, and yet again, until our essence is worn away.

There's no order to the Other Place, but it's still peaceful.dictionary.com wrote:A condition or place of great disorder or confusion.
Sentynel wrote: When you fall asleep, time in your dreams is entirely different to real time. Each dream lasts a mere 20 seconds or so, but days can pass in the dreams.
Time can also appear to run at different speeds - Einstein: 'If you sit on a hot stove for a minute, it seems like an hour. If you sit with a nice girl for an hour, it seems like a minute.'
That's the closest we can come to understanding time in the Other Place.
If a spirit isn't summoned, it isn't defined from the rest of the Other Place, and so has no conciousness.
