First book: mildly annoyed. I'm sorry to report that I skipped one or two of his chapters and had to go back and read them the first time I read Amulet of Samarkand.
Second book: deeply irritated to the point of loathing. It was cool that he at least wasn't turning out to be some perfect-werfect Potter clone, but that didn't make me hate him any less.
Third book: don't know! :P

Some of his more "you-know-what" moments were pretty fun to read, but it didn't last all of his bits of the story - otherwise you ended up just wishing he'd stop being such a "you-know-what".

I think Nathaniel was written very well by stroud, so you either love him or hate him, but you never feel nothing about him
