I like Apple, hate Microsoft, and Linux is alright, even if it's just an offshoot of UNIX.

Any reasons for those choices?

MacOSX is "just an offshoot of UNIX".

Not anymore at least... supposedly...

And No.
OS X uses a UNIX Kernel. Think of it as the foundation of the programming.
When Jobs was kicked out of Apple, he founded NeXT, and part of said company was something called NeXTStep.
It was NeXT's OS, designed to run on their black boxes.
When Apple bought NeXT, they gained Jobs and his NeXTStep, of OS X is a direct descendant.
I believe the Kernal used in both is the Mach 1 or somthing... go look it up.

What does it matter what the base code is? All that matters is that it is better than the competition.

"Mac OS X is based on the Mach kernel and is derived from the Berkeley Software Distribution (BSD) implementation of Unix in Nextstep. Nextstep was the object-oriented operating system developed by Steve Jobs' company "NeXT" after he left Apple in 1985."
"The GNU Project, started in 1984, had the goal of creating a "complete Unix-compatible software system" made entirely of free software."

Linux' only links to UNIX are that the Linux kernel was written with UNIX specifications in mind as a replacement for MINIX, which is itself a UNIX derivative, and that it uses GNU Project software, which was written as UNIX compatible. On the other hand, MacOSX is much more closely related to UNIX, being derived from Nextstep, which was derived from BSD, which was derived from UNIX. Calling Linux "just an offshoot of UNIX" is even more inaccurate than calling MacOSX "just an offshoot of UNIX".

Where'd you quote that from?

btw, it should read "...of which OS X is a direct descendant."

Actually, the interface is years in the design. OSX and Vista are both evolutions of the same concept.

The quotes are from Wikipedia. You can't beat me on Linux stuff. =p And yes, I gathered that was what you meant.

Linux has the capability to be vastly prettier than either OSX or Vista. Ubuntu with KDE (with a decent theme) and Beryl can look vastly better than both, be infinitely more customisable, and even outdo the 3D spinny-rotatey in Vista for a fraction of the performance cost (seriously, I can run Beryl on my Eee without it lagging - that's a glorious 600MHz processor and Intel Integrated Graphics - remind me what the Aero minimum specs are again?).
