"No my friend, when the time comes, you will be summoning me."
Or, something to that effect.
Ptolemy's Gate was the reversal of the process used to summon a spirit.
There is no 'gate', no 'portal', only process.
Ptolemy was the only one Bart would have allowed into the Other Place, and so when he died, his 'Gate', the portal, was closed.

He was the only human who treated dijinni equally, and wished to break their bond of enslavement.
Ptolemy might be the first, but not the only human to do so. Are you not counting Kitty? :welcome:

One thing I've wondered, is I guess a nature vs nurture deal, going on with the magicians.
You've got to remember that all the magicians, at some point, were scared little children who's parents dumped them for a little money, who had no name and were often abused for the first ten years of their lives.

I wonder that perhaps the reason Bartimaues pitied Nathaniel was because he saw the scared little boy. Bart's smart, he must know what happens with all magicians, but with Nat he actually got to see the whole process. When he saw Nathaniel, he still remembered the scared little boy.

I agree. Come, let me find that line in The Amulet Of Samarkand...

So I became a boy I had known once before, someone I had loved.

Yes, but he was refering to Ptolemy, not Nat.
In AoS, Bartimaeu saw what Nat could be, the person he eventually became, in time to save the world.
