Top 100 Novels

Book Discussion
Bible...I don't know of many would agree with your choice. But I don't think religious works should be included.

You just need to read the first post in this thread, Datsyuk. The list is out there. Some of the books you mentioned are already included.
"If the bee disappears from the surface of the earth, man would have no more than four years to live. No more bees, no more pollination ... no more men!" - Einstein
"I like quoting Einstein. Know why? Because nobody dares contradict you." - Studs Terkel.

I believe both Hitchhikers and Dune should be expanded to the entire series (as written by the original author). Or, at least, for Adams. Dune was the best of the series, and I don't mind too much if it stand alone.

Red Storm Rising, Tom Clancy. Accurate were it not for little Special Forces action. Limited nowadays, without that little cold war thing, but hey, excellent book nonetheless.

And, to no surprise to anybody, I submit Anthem, The Fountainhead, and Atlas Shrugged.

Insomnia or The Stand, by Stephen King.

And, fiction or nonfiction, shouldn't the bible get honorable mention?
I'll add yours and expand some of the other books. Mind you I already said Atlas Shrugged.

And I don't recall anyone suggesting the Bible; unless you are right now...
The works of Shakespeare. Too lazy to check if they're already there :)

Em...every single one?

And I'm not sure if scripts and sonnets and whatnot count. I'll think about it.

And how could I forget V for Vendetta?

Has All Quiet on the Western Front been mentioned? Great, great war book. I also nominate Elie Wiesel's Night. And possibly Foundation by Asimov.

Oh, and if we're doing religious texts, then the Qur'an, the Bible, and the Bhagavad Gita should all be mentioned.

We're not sure about religious text.

But yes, I agree, All Quiet on the Western Front must be there. I'll also add you other ones too.
I give my vote to not include religious books.
I give my vote for 'em. Like it or not, you can't deny the crazy amount of influence that they've had (and continue to) all over the world. Also, Jesus. So add Lamb by Christopher Moore. I haven't read it, but it definitely sounds awesome.

And having reccently read Freakonomics, it definitely deserves its place on the list.

I added Freakonomics. I liked it a lot too.

Well, this is our list. Have they had much influence amongst any of us in Bartiforums? If yes, then I suppose we should add it. But personally, I would rather not have them there. I mean, who are we going to add as authors? :P. Nero?

Qur'an -- seventh century Arabians
Bible -- Ancient Israelis, first century Israelis, Greeks, and Romans
Bhagavad Gita -- Ancient Aryans (?)

Oh, and has World War Z been mentioned?! I think it may have been, but I'm just making sure.
No. Now that's blasphemous. :P

Don't tell me I'm the only one who loves theological debates?

I don't find religion a bit interesting. The culture is interesting, but debating holy books is not. And religious traditions usually don't make sense. Debating about god is far more interesting but science wins.

I suppose if I get to be the author of the Bible... =P

But for this list, I just want any of the listed types of text, typically fiction. I don't want any debates over religion here. But there's no denying the massive affect that religious literature has on society, so I'll make an exception, and perhaps make religious text a special honour. But it won't be a part of the list.

If that's the case, than historical texts of non-religious nature should be in the same category.

And so which novels would that include?
