I think the film rights were first taken when all the big companies tried to obtain the next big kid's fantasy movie. There were some good ones, but Eragon's complete failure scared a bunch of the studios off. Then the recession.

Well that's what happens when you make a movie off bad material.
Part of me does not want a movie to come out, it might just make the series a laughing stock! But a much smaller part of me wants it to be released just to see how it turns out! :-/
But i think it would be horrible if it does come out! It will need good amount of animation, and a very good narrative voice, hard to find for Bart!

Have faith. It could very well be good. Even if the movie is passable, it is going to good news because it would get more people to read the books. Or at least, hear of the books.
