Nathaniel's childhood

Amulet Of Samarkand
In spite of the events in his childhood, Nat still has a northernly moral compass. Sure, the whole let's annihilate Lovelace thing is a bit iffy, but on the whole you can't really blame him. He does try to stop Lovelace which is indirectly heroic but, in the end I think he's really in it for the reputation. He does seem to want to take after Gladstone. In summary, I think the only good magician is the one who does it for OTHERS. Take a look at Kitty, Ptolemy, or (possibly) Asmira.
