Nathaniel's childhood

Amulet Of Samarkand
One of the reasons I've always felt a lot of compassion for Nathaniel (check out my two long fanfics) is because of what we're told about his childhood in this book. Honestly...abandoned by your parents when you were five? Then locked in a study with imps? Trauma!
I sometimes wonder why his parents would have done it...honestly...poor Nat. No wonder he was so corrupted and everything.
Any thoughts?

It's routine, if one goes with Stroud.

Yes. And I'm sure it happened to Underwood, Lovelace, Whitewell, Duvall, etc.

If you're going to feel sorry for Nat for the crappy childhood, I'd say feel sorry for the rest of the magicians as well, since the majority of them were also probably raised that way as well.

Was Jane raised by wolves? Because someone else said that she was part wolf

And his parents could have given him away because they thought that if he was a magician he'd have a better life. And face it, he probably did because he lived in luxury and had so much power.

Was he really given away at the age of 5?

Werewolf, Lycophony (Grammar police, spare me.) Thinking it's a spell that's cast over willing candidates.

She did it willingly? I thought she was born with it kinda like the resistance. And isn't it lycanthrope?

I thought that werewolves were bit by another werewolf. Even if that's how it ussually is, I think Struod would still put it like that.
It is lycanthrope.
And it's probably by being bitten by a wolf or a spell.

I don't think it's transferred by bites in the book. That would make creating new members of the Night Police a very clumsy process. It's implied it's a spell.

Really? Do the wolves change shape every night? It seems to be implied that way. Changing only during the full moon would seriously hinder police proceedings and such. o.o *has seen to many crime shows* The thing about Jane being a wolf is just speculation...me thinks she was human.

On topic: Sounds like magicians are allergic to procreation or something. I wonder what a delivery scene at the hospital would look like. Maybe the parents would be wrinkling their noses at the slimy thing. o.o Sounds like how I see newborns but nevermind...

Depends if both the parents are magicians I guess. Mrs. Underwood probably wouldn't do that.

Could Magicians become infertile because of the amount of magic they're exposed to? 'Cause all new magicians seem to be orphans.
Lol...magic, yep! I bet it's the demons, Barty would definitely approve of this method of retribution.

Wolves can change shape at will, whenever. Look at Duvall's 'escape'.

Magicians aren't allowed children, because they lead to family groups and blood feuds and other political difficulties.

Dynasties, even without them, look at the infighting. At a blood bond would encourage loyalty. The magicians were wrong.

But imagine if, rather than mere power struggles in the government, rival families of magicians would actually take any opportunity to blow the crap out of each other. They'd never run a government like that.
