Nathaniel in the Third Book.

Ptolemy's Gate
Major spoilers in this topic in general so if you've stumbled in here without reading the third book then you might want to stumble back out. :D

I finished reading the third book a few days ago, and I've been thinking about it.

What would the effect have been if Nathaniel hadn't died? Would the book still have left an impression in the reader's mind, or would it have been dismissed as "another good book" and put aside on the shelf to read in another six months?

I sort of think that the implied death of the main character (Note the word "implied", commercialism and money is always ready for another book) made the series end rather nicely. Stroud is one of the best character killing authors I've ever seen and he did a very good job.

Would you have liked the book more if he lived? I would have. But the death did bring good for the trilogy, I guess.

Topic open for discussion.

Note: I can't highlight text in this forum. The text boxes are also really awkward, you can't click in them, you have to press tab and stuff. Is it just my computer or is it a glitch?

Even if Nat didn't die, the writing quality is too good to be ignored.
Yeah, the death was an excellent end to the triology

I beleive the death was needed to give closure of this chapter of Barti's life.Strouds character building writing was so good that we didn't need a happy ending for it to be a great read.Just my mite size opinion....

Yes!, thats why its called the bartimaeus trilogy, the end of this part of bartimaeus's life.

Oh and its not a glitch, thats the way it works, it think.

I will look into highlighting but you can use the underline, and colour change? :P

It was one of the best endings I've ever read in a book. Usually, authors don't take huge risks like killing of main characters, even when the series has ended, because it's very difficult to make it right. I think Nathaniel's death showed how significant his character development was throughout the third book. *sigh* He was such an awesome character.

And like what the other's have said, it's a closure to Bartimaeus's life. So if he hadn't died, I would still like the 3rd book, just not as much.

It's all fine now. :3

It would be really really really cool if Stroud published a couple of "Mini stories". Like, things that happened in between or before all three of the books. They could be compiled into a seperate book that has a huge spoiler warning on the front. <3

Bearing in mind they haven't even confirmed films yet...

(Shudder) No, films aren't meant to be continued as a TV series.

No way. I would never let anyone disgrace the name of Bartimaeus by putting him on a mini-series...*nods*

I really hope they make a movie. :(
I loved the Bartimaeus books but, like all trilogies, it was way too short.

In the 'thanks to' section at the end of Gate, Miramax is mentioned... suggesting that there might be a film planned.

This is George Lucas we're talking about here. Someone guilty of Star Wars Episodes 1-3 is not someone to judge films/TV series by.

A film might not be the best idea, it can ruin the series.
If anyone has ever seen the film: Clan of the Cave Bear, they will know what I mean.
