Now, that is a real Hollywood disaster. 100,000 dead and a Million homeless. Quite a bit more than Katrina's 2000 dead. But you what the real sad part is? Katrina's economic cost of Katrina and thus, the world's respose to it, was atleast double the proabable cost of Irrawady's destitution.

BBC says 12,000 recorded deaths at the moment.

More people will die because they're poorer than the US. Same with the tsunami, the Pacific has an early warning system because of US input, but the Indian Ocean didn't.

Well... 18,000 dead and 44,000 missing.

The next decade is going to be very rocky. Economic recession, more cyclones courtesy Climate change, The big Food Shortage (Which is all Bush's fault actually. 'It's because of those Asians getting richer and eating too much.' Feh.)

Officially: 22000 dead, 30000 missing
What the UN has "heard": 100000 dead, many more missing

and for those Brits/Americans who aren't sure Myanmar is Burma, we are the only countries allowed to call it Burma :D

My teacher was theorizing that countries may be hesitant to give support, 'cos they're unsure if the government will waste the money of guns or something like that...

Also, we still call it Burma
the new name of myanmar is burma...or might be vice versa...
but it doesnt really matter...its the natuaral disasters that matter.. becoming way to common for convinience....ugghh..bloody tsunamis, cyclones, tornados, etc etc etc...but well..they dont have any other way to react do they..nature i mean.. its the people that suck...someone should do something...do any of youall believe in magic?random, but still.

Burma is the original name; the ruling junta calls it Myanmar, but various places, mostly English-speaking nations, refuse to recognise the name change and still call it Burma.
We're not trying to give financial aid, we're trying to give direct supplies - food, water, shelter, etc. But the government's very suspicious of letting anybody in, good intentions or no.
I don't believe there's much sound evidence that natural disasters are actually getting more common, though it's likely that they will with global warming. They're just better reported nowadays.

When the start page on my teachers computer popped up with the story about it, I turned and said to my teacher (who's comp. I was fixing) and said:
"Makes Katrina sound like a windstorm, doesn't it?"

Cyclone Nargis has officially killed just under 23,000 people, but reports reach 100,000.

165 km/h- 105 mph sustained

215 km/h- 135 mph peaked

phew.
