It's not in the footnotes. He doesn't describe things which have a very real impact on the story in footnotes. That would be like describing his summoning in a footnote.

Details, such as the cause of the rift, not the effects which are being described in the main story, are described in the footnotes.

The cause of the rift is Ramuthra being summoned through it. That's self explanatory. The effects of Ramuthra and the rift have direct bearing on the story and so aren't described in the footnotes.

Partly, but the rift is there because the Summoning Horn, an artifact of great power, ripped it open. It makes sense that the rift is the thing causing all of this, since it's not a normal summoning tool. Space itself is being torn apart.

Yes, but space itself is being torn apart around Ramuthra due to its strength. The rift stays put. Ramuthra moves. The disruption effect goes with both.

Yes, disruption follows both.

Ramuthra is indeed expanding the rift, but for all we know, any spirit of considerable power may do the same, and have the same effect.

But Nouda doesn't, therefore he's weaker. QED.

Nouda never had the chance to, as Nouda didn't come in through a bloody rift in the space-time continuum.

The rift is only there cos Ramuthra is so powerful. No normal spirit creates one.

"Eddies in the space-time continuum!"
"Really? What's he doing there then?"

The rift is there because the summoning horn ripped it open.

The summoning horn is just an easy way of summoning powerful spirits. Every spirit creates a rift as it comes through, it's just that most close again after them.

If what you say is true, then why should the rift close? It justs has to do its job and leave.

yo read the little comments, barti says that nouda was probably more than a marid wich implies that he is a relatively week superior spirit. dont be fooled by his arrogance, he aint that strong. and seriously nothing in the book makes you think he is
I am Bartimaeus, Sakhr al-Jinni!! I am N'gorso the Mighty, and the SERPENT OF SILVER PLUMES!! I have spoken with Solomon, and rebuilt the walls of Uruk, Karnak and Prague!!

Erm, no, among the class of spirits, a marid is the strongest, right after afrit, making him a Greater Spirit. There is no other way to describe these ebings, as the most powerful recorded class is a marid.

Nouda only got more powerful as he devoured more magicians. I believe he was a moderate Greater Spirit. But please, don't bring the damn debate up again!

Ramuthra is more powerful. Both are beyond marids but Ramuthra took 4 magicians to summon him (one of which was Makepeace) whereas Nouda was summoned by Makepeace on his own. Also, in the final scene Bartimeaus shouts to Nouda that he has dealt with far greater entities than Nouda and the entities he lists include Ramuthra. :lol2:
