A few questions about the identity of the Mercenary. We know he had a huge resistance to magic-but wouldn't he have had to be alive for a long time? Or was he just born with the power? Could he have been part of a different nation that had fallen? Sooo many unanswered questions.

He has natural resistance and the ability to see all seven planes. Like the abilities of the Resistance, but much stronger.
The Seven League Boots are the only magical item he carries - he only has to get rid of them to stop being attacked in the Government vault.

I agree. The name sounded Czech, so he must have been there at some time-or some other place. Natural abilities, yes, but it also said that it takes often hundreds of years for the resistance to build up.

I liked him because something bad always happened. Gave some excitement in unexpected places.
I loved the Bartimaeus books but, like all trilogies, it was way too short.

Yea thats wut i couldnt figure out.

Hmmm... I reckon he might be a sort of modern descendant of that sect. He doesn't work only when there's a full moon, or have really long toenails, but otherwise he could be.
