One of the best openings ever? i certainly think so. Love it when Nat asks his name and he says " BARTIMAEUS?"

Thoughts?

Well, yes, because it's Barti.

At first, I thought it was the stupidest opener ever, until I actually got to the dialouge. It was about three pages worth of descrptions.

Then I was hooked when Nat and Bart began exchanging words.

"You belong in Gryffindor,
where dwell the brave at heart,
Their daring, nerve and chivalry
set Gryffindors apart."

I thought the opening got me in straight away.

Really? The first two pages drove me insane.

where dwell the brave at heart,
Their daring, nerve and chivalry
set Gryffindors apart."

Why exactly? It looked pretty good to me.

Same here. It took me just a few seconds of thought to picture Nathaniel's room.

Actually it was the opposite to the extreme for me. I was nine or ten when I got the first book and found the beginning daunting. I simply could not force myself to read past the first page. Finally (after between four months to a year) I started it and after I got into the actual dialogue (sp?) and saw that Bartimaeus indeed had a personality other than "great other-worldly being that is better than you and can talk in cool ways".

Wow. I liked it. Appropriate start to a great trilogy.

I loved the beggining. It seemed a bit stupid until the dialouge started, but even then I could tell it was going to be a good book. Plus you meet Barti for the first time - what's not to like?

Their tasteless tooth will tear and taint
The poet, patiot,sage or saint,
Nor sparing wit nor learning.

It's the huge, long descriptions. Plus, my friend who I tried to get to read it said there was too much magic.

Of course, I replied it was a fantasy book.

Well, apparently you can.

It's her opinion, not mine. You can try arguing, but neither of you get anywhere.

sure we willl.....eh never mind, i didn't mind the description at all, it gave me a near-perfect mental image of barti, nat, and the room, though i was confused a bit when i first read the first few pages because of the confiction of time periods.

Too much magic? If she reads Potter than you should fry her for hypocracy.
