Nat has lots of emotion. Like hate, and the burning desire for revenge and power. He never loved Barti until the end. He just used him.

Bart was 6th and more powerful than the rest combined. Nat had the political poise, not great power. I'd say Whitewell, Lovelace, Deveraux's bodyguards and Makepeace were far stronger.

Nat, to a large extent, believed the propoganda dished out by the goverment. He believed Magicains were the best thing ever to happen to the people; and in the high moral ground of being powerful. This dulled in Golem's eye and Gate, but to the end he wanted power. He sacrificed himself because he was dying, if he was hale and healthy, would he have did the self-righteous suicide thing? Would he have saved Bartimaeus? I don't think so.

He was already detaching himself from his snotty aspect though. It was just with the meetup with Kitty and what Makepeace was doing was the final blow.

If he was as cold as you say he is (although he was, a lot), explain this. Bartimaeus was about to die, and Nathaniel had a choice of getting quick information from Bartimaeus as his expense. But no, he dismissed him to the Other Place. And there was the fact that Jane was the one telling Nat to do it. And we all know he didn't want to displease her.

Explained in the book. He couldn't break a childhood connection. Bartimaeus was always mocking, self assured and witty. Seeing him broken, uncouncious and mentally blured must have shocked him, implusive reaction. He would have killed him if he had known the destrucion to his carreer and the lie about kitty.

But that was before his encounter with Ms. Lutyens. After seeing her and her disgust at what he had become, Nat reformed. He protected Kitty and the other commoners from the Nouda and the demons, although after seeing the first comoner's fear of him, he locked away his emotions.

Nat freed Barti because he knew it was the right thing to do. It was his fight, not Barti's

Actually that was after Makepeaces's coup. We never saw the full scope of his 'reform'.
