Terrorism

General Chat

Is a terrorist act ever appropriate, forgivable, or necessary?

Yes
No
Depends on the act (reasons why below)
I got this from the link you sent, Sent. I dunno if you went that far, but its on the 1st page itself.

Reports also indicate that the LeT receives considerable financial, material and other forms of assistance from the Pakistan government, routed primarily through the ISI[31]. Pakistan’s security agencies are reported to be providing training to the outfit. A December 13, 2001 news report cited a LeT spokesperson as saying that the outfit wanted to avoid a clash with the Pakistani Government[32]. He claimed, even though the government has been an ardent supporter of all Muslim freedom movements, particularly that of Kashmir, in the present conditions a clash was possible because of the sudden wedge that appeared between the interests of the government and those of terrorist outfits active in J&K.
According to the declaration of LeT operatives, the Pakistan Army, particularly in the borders with India (the International Border and the Line of Control - LoC) aids members of the outfit in their infiltration, extraction and clashes with Indian security forces near the borders by providing covering fire[33].

Well, about the government link, I told you before & tell you again-I believe Pak's government as a whole is indeed against terrorism. But there are some members in the Parliament who still provide support to the army & ISI. The very first line of the which I highlighted shows that. But as Datsyuk has said, they are just media reports & can't be proved. But as Musharaff supported the army & ISI & appointed his own people in the cabinet, some of whom still hold their positions, I think it's quite possible to say the some elements in the government do support the terrorists.
Now India has once again asked Pakistan to hand over the 20 terrorists who caused various blasts across India. They all live in Pakistan now. India has asked for them numerous times before, but the Pakistan government has always been reluctant, always giving excuses. They don't even try to stop them! If they do now & turn them over, I won't say a word against the Pak government again. But if they don't, my suspicion will only rise.

About the army, well LeT operatives themselves have said that the Pak army helps them. I dunno if this has been true in recent times, but surely in the past they did. But I can't say with certainity that the Pak army as a whole, supports LeT. The ISI surely do, but I'm not 100% sure about the entire Pak army. But I'm certain that atleast some of them do. Some big bucks.

What's the beeb? BBC? I know its one of the best news channels, but since the tragedy took place in India, you cannot actually expect them to compete with the Indian news channels. Wouldn't be fair.

Ah, yes, I saw those bits. Meant to mention them. The citations given are from 2001/2003 news articles and thus highly unlikely to be relevant now.

Well, Pakistan has refused to hand the 20/21 terrorists. Say they will try them in their own courts. When they are all charged with attacks against India! Nor will the Pakistan government take the cases seriously(as they were not affected) & may delay it & provide wrong judgements as a few of those terrorists are provided support by the ISI(Dawood Ibrahim being among them). Why the heck can't they turn them over? Havn't other nations in the past done that?
Today, nation wide protests are taking place in India. Big demonstantations in atleast 8 cities. I am going to join one tomorrow & I'm visiting Gateway of India too with my friends(where Taj, Nariman House,CST & Leopold Cafe are situated). We are going to express our solidarity & pledge to fight against terrorism.

I think I ought to tell you, the official death toll figure released by the government still stands around 200 & not 400. The unofficial figure is around 400, which I'm sure is correct. The government has not yet said how many died in Taj & might have a good reason not to disclose it. Fire brigades who removed the bodies say it is 160 there. Add to this 56 in CST, 60 in Oberoi, 40 (not 100% sure about this) in Leopold Cafe, 5 in Nariman House, around 10 or more in Taxi blasts & shootings in Vile Parle, 20 police, army, NSG & others. Plus the death of the critically injured across various hospitals in the city. The government might release the new figure soon.

Deporting criminals is a difficult subject. There are many problems deporting criminals between "friendly" nations like the US and UK, never mind between two nations who get on as well as India and Pakistan, so it's hardly surprising there are problems.

Yeah really.
I actually thought pakistan didn't have a deportation policy.
Nice to know I was wrong.

Who cares if Pakistan has a deportation policy or not? India never had the policy to allow foriegn investigators question terrorists captured by them for terrorists strikes out here. But this time around, it allowed the FBI to interrogate the captured terrorist, Kasab. Times change. When Pakistan government has promised to do all it can to help India, it can do this. Mightbe not hand all the 20, but atleast the main ones. Like the LeT chief & Dawood Ibrahim who is actually an Indian.

Not all current terrorism is caused by muslim extremists
A lot of large scale attacks recently have been, but that isn't to say that they are the only ones at the current time.

Quite true, muslims aren't the only ones.
Far from it.
They just get the most of the media attention.
And they do, after all, do quite a bit.

I agree though max terrorists come from Pak & Afganistan, they are'nt the only ones. I don't think its fair to call them 'muslim' extremist. It sought of degrades the whole religion. Terrorism has no religion. The innocent Muslims feel so bad about people associationg terrorism with their religion.
Anyway, Eid Mubarak to one & all.

Actually 'jihad' comes from the name of a 6th pilar of Islam followed by some islamic terrorists.
Muslim is actually not degrading to the religion, it highlights their origins (kind of).
If the terrorist isn't from the middle east, then no.
Saying all terrorists are islamic degrades the whole religion.

Ah well, I was just voicing the concerns of the Muslims which were splashed all over the papers on Bakr-Eid. People throw them accusing glances when they go to work etc. & that sort of freaks them out. It must be pretty harrowing to be blamed for something they didn't do. They asked people not to call it 'Muslim' terrorism & I just thought I would pass on the message. Anyway, what you say is in a way right too.
