*has never heard of it*
Also welcome, glad to have you here.
Good to see this discussion's gettting some good responses. You guys have made some good points.
Warning: This post's gonna be long. Also I am tired, so it's going to jump around a bit.
First of all Alec, if you really think Meyer is such a good author, you can show her some respect and actually bother to spell her name right.
Alec wrote:and post I resent being called a crazed fan boy, Im not crazed and Im merely a appreciator
He never said you specifically were a crazed fan. Just to make that clear.
Alec wrote:Can you please give me some really serious reasons why you dont like it apart from its popular, difrent and that people enjoy reading it?
These last 5 or so pages have been us giving you other reasons. Please read them again if you are not clear on that point.
Kitty wrote:All they do is eat raw meat. They have no fangs, they sparkle in the light, they can read minds and run really fast. Oh, and they're pale
Yeah they're more like "edgy, conflicted" superheroes. Without much real edge or conflict.
Alec wrote:Myre is a very competent author, she understands peoples emotions, she understands desire, she plays with words, makes them perform for her, and shes quit clearly published*
* surely by definition this makes her a competent author, the ability not only to impress an publisher whos entire occupation and lifestyle relays on finding good and competent authors but to impresses and entertain a vast population of readers, i know some of you here werent impressed but a lot more were.
Yes she may be competent enough to get published, but notice how competent doesn't exactly equal good.
Popular doesn't equal good either.
wrote:This is what you dont get, its not primarily a vampire series its a ROMANCE series, the fact that some of theme are sparkly vampires and wolf spirit werewolfs only enhances the plot, its not a historical series in which accuracy is essential, the reason why its loved so much is that even though its so quit clearly not real it creates a sense of it being real which is why shes such a genius writer.
Genius!? She's a genius now?
Accuracy also enhances plot.
Real? Never has Twilight seem real to me. I am not referring to the fantasy elements of the story, I'm referring to:

Myres books take us on a rollercoaster of these emotions and experiences and its not because of the sparkly vampires^ but because of the love, fear, anger, and just in general pure emotion which the twilight series make us feel.
Emotion. The emotions of Meyer's characters barely pass for such. Merely saying "I am in love," and "I am scared" doesn't make the character seem amorous (is that the right word there?) or scared. Actually describing the emotions does. Meyer's characters have no real character, as such. They have no real defining characteristics, other than those explicitly stated by the narration, which are flat, reduced to merely adjectives or maybe a scene of Bella tripping over a leaf. Meyer only tells, she fails to show.
As for identifying with the characters, there isn't exactly much to identify
with, as explained above. I think that the major appeal of Twilight is that Bella appears as an almost blank slate, and the reader can imagine herself as Bella (I can't because, she seems incredibly bitchy and whiny to me, and the few decisions she does make are mostly decisions I would never make in a million years). Meyer specifically stated that was why she never gave Bella's actual appearance a real description, unlike all the other detail that probably could have been cut out. Real characters have CHARACTER. (does that make sense?)
Alec wrote:but really why do you hate the twilight series, and yes from what i can see thats what it is a irrational hate of a series of books that have hurt no one,
Notice I have never stated that I hate Twilight. Ever. Please do not assume things. I am merely trying to provide intelligent critisism of a novel, and maybe improve my own writing skills.
Alec wrote:really if you must hate certain books why not hate something thats done something to deserve it, ever read lord of the flies, it caused the rape of a 15 year old girl... but your not getting my point, Lord of the flies is probably the most cynical look at humanity, its sick and twisted... Has there ever been a more cynical look at literature?
Now you're telling us which books to hate?
Also, I have a hard time believing a novel could actually cause a crime, that is the fault of the perpetrator and their interpretation (or possibly their excuse).
Lord of the Flies isn't exactly the best example of cynical, sick and twisted. And yes to answer your question, you can find novels much worse. Flies was written less as you describe it and more as a more realistic view at how things would turn out if young children were isolated from society and guidance, than other "boys trapped on an island" books which were popular in Goldman's time which depicted the children as having a jolly old time.
Alec wrote:and if its the defecation of the idea of vampires you annoyed about, ever watched a vampire anime?
The point is not "what Meyer has done to vampires in comparison to other interpretations," it's "what Meyer has done to vampires."
Alec wrote:
Teenage girls loved it for what it is, and the only resion youve been attacking twilight is because they love it and like to talk about it? Now i suggest that you think about that.
Again, never was it said that we dislike Twilight because many teenage girls like it. I am a teenage girl myself in a school filled with teenage girls, many of whom like Twilight. I don't hate them for it.
Wow, that only took like an hour... I'm going to bed now.
Edit: I wanna see 9. And Gamer.
