I dunno, I always saw Nathaniel as the main character. After all, everything is centered around him, Barti carried out *his* plan and ideas.

That's only to mix it up.

It's Nat's story and Bartimaeus and Kitty are really just the two big influeneces in his life and the reasons why he did things.

Do you think Lovelace was a kind of role model for younger Nat?

Of course he was. Even if neither wanted such thing. He was the magician he grew up with.

Nathaniel hardly grew up with Lovelace... he met him a couple of times and that was about it.

Quite. Hardly the sort of person he's going to want to be like.

Yet John Mandrake is almost exactly like Lovelace.

He's like every powerful magician. He didn't set out to become like Lovelace, he set out to better the other government magicians.

He was a noble man, on the quest for justice.

John Mandrake was far from noble. Only Nat was noble.

More to the point, John was like every ambitious magician. Regardless, the Lovelace-Mandrake similarities *were* intentional.

im supposing you used *were* because both of 'em are dead?

No, because Nathaniel beat John Mandrake at the end, and because Stroud is not currently writing his character.

In the author's opinion Barti is the main character, but I've always felt that even though I don't like Nat, that he was who the story was about.

This is me getting back to the orininal topic
life is odd. you come in, you grow, you shrivel, and you leave.
i mean what's the point????
Amulet of Samarkand, the main character was Nat
Golems Eye: Kitty
Ptolemy's gate: Bart
or at least that's how I see it...

1: Nathaniel, Bartimaeus.
2. Nathaniel, Bartimaeus, Kitty.
3. Nathaniel, Bartimaeus, Kitty. (maybe a bit of Ptolemy, too.)

Eh, idk bout Ptolemy in PG. Yes, his name's in the title, but in reality the flashbacks are explaining more about why Bartimaeus cared for Ptolemy so much... I see it as a plot tool more than a main character.

Book 1: The main characters were Nat and Bart, but the character Stroud focused on more was Nat.

Book 2: The main characters were Nat, Bart and Kitty, Stroud focused on Kitty more than the other two.

Book 3: The main characters were Nat, Bart and Kitty, but Bart was the character Stroud focused on in this book.
