So first off, I LOVED the book.
[+] Spoiler
Secondly, Lockwood/Kipps all the way!
[+] Spoiler
Thirdly, I can't wait to see Lucy communicate with a Type 3. ...Actually, what was that thing in the jar at the end of the book considered?

A bit weird, but i suppose if you ca have George/ghostjar...
[+] Spoiler
And i'd say Ghostjar would be a type 2. I'm sure we'll see type 3's in future books
Siiight. Spoilers, spoilers... :-/ so sad that we still need them... :(

I'm pretty sure the ghost jar is a Type 3 - they're described as fully communicative with living people, which the ghost in the jar clearly is. Type 2s have agency, but aren't fully communicative.

I'd like to amend that type threes are fully communicative with SENSITIVE people for listening, like Lucy. remember how they talk about that famous girl ghost hunter, and how they say with awe that she was "rumoured to be able to have whole conversations with type threes"?

Yeah, not your average happening. George and Lockwood wouldn't, imho, be able to hear it even if they let it all the way out.

Damn I've got to read those books, thinking about ordering them tomorrow.
I feel like stepping on hot coal barefooted, trying to avoid reading the spoilers!

I agree that the level of spoilers is getting a wee bit ridiculous.
[+] Spoiler
Lockwood said he didn't believe in type 3's didn't he?
Wonder what he's gonna say 'bout ghostjar

Why is everyone complaining about spoilers when half of them are shipping and Dave's gifs?

So I'm wondering what other powers a Type Three Species has. If someone with extraordinary hearing can have full conversations, what about those with Sight? Touch? Will they appear to be fully human? Like a Hollywood twist?

About someone's point earlier, the idea of children acting as responsible adults is certainly an interesting theme. Of course it's more or less always been a theme in Stroud's books, but in this case I get a Ender's game vibe. Maybe the Problem with have something to do with adult meddling and insensitivity.
Oh, and I was quite impressed with how scary the book really was, even in full daylight. I really got the creeps when I was reading the glossary at the back and all the different species of ghosts.

Though not as good as the Bartimaeus books. Or The Last Siege. Still worth a good read.

Well, I'd say it's as good as Bartimaeus, only with less books

Thiiiiiiiiis.

I'd say it was about Amulet level, so I'll wait for the rest of the series before making too many comparisons. Bartimaeus is still Stroud's best character though.

I read it overnight - I finished at about 3:30am. Highly recommended, and I fully intend to read the next one on that basis too if possible.

Hmm. I read it split between the day and overnight. Scary both ways, but when you walk away in one of those situations you always look over your shoulder...
I made a point of reading the Hall stuff at night in a sleeping bag on the floor with a little reading light. So much fun. :)

I bet it was. I have only read it at daylight, but it still creeped me out, even if you're in your room at 5pm.

Weirdly enough, the book hardly creeped me out. Probably because I stretched it for many days.

I would love it too if Lucy and George got together! Lucy/Lockwood would be comparatively boring. And yeah, I think Lockwood's parents have something huge to do with the story, but not sure about them being connected to the origin of the Problem. I hope we come to know what's inside that room in the 2nd book. Like many stated, it is possible his parents are there in the ghost form there. And I loved all the George jokes too! And why could Lucy suddenly hear the ghost in the ghost jar?
