Galileo was a heretic, and he was put under house guard, etc. Many scientists who developed basic science in the past were branded heretics.

Strangely, Galileo was a devout man, who was ever faithful to the Church in that time. I don't thnik that makes him a "heretic." Well, maybe. I don't know.
But The CC was dealing with lots of troubles then, because the recently had to undergo the Protestant Reformation. So I guess they felt threatened by anything that seemed to challenge them.

If the Church called you a heretic, you were a heretic.
And subject to being burned alive.

You are correct in saying they were having "troubles". They also had control issues.
Look, Queezle.

Galileo was branded a heretic. Full stop. They only let him live because he promised not to publish if I remember correctly. Naturally, he had it published after he died.

True.

Of course, today the Catholic Church doesn't go around burning denoted heretics at the stake anymore. When was the last time someone was officially denounced, "heretic" by the Vatican? My guess: A long time ago.
