If you google teh word corpse candle you get several wikipedia links that some of them (can't remember which) links you to some old arabian story that jinnis of the fire or ifrits took place in small fires near graveyards and similar and lured unwary travellers down there to their doom. Perhaps the candle on the skeletal hand that he said he got from a gallow infact is an afrit encased. That'd explain the mighty aura bartimaeus spoke of.

I don't think there was a powerful aura, do you mean when it shot the illuminated circlet? And it says in the encyclopedia thingy that the illuminated circlet is triggered by an imp.
