Yep. Not a bad game. Not brilliant, either.

That's pretty much what I'm thinking right now. What propaganda for Icewind Dale?

Half Life 2 is a decent shooter, but it's Garry's Mod that really makes it fun.

I didn't like CoD much, and Max Payne is too different in style to be compared, really.

Apart from having one of the finest engines in the business, including Havok physics, HL2 has plenty of other stuff to show.
The way the story is delivered. It doesn't steal a style from graphic novels, books or movies, it has its own. The more you look around, the more you find - like the ape/man/combine graffiti.
The control model is damn near perfect. It doesn't feel too fast or too slow. It's easy to get on and off ladders. Little bits of polish like that.
The vehicles are easy and fun to control (particularly the crane :D ).
It makes good use of the Havok physics. Puzzles like the crane, and the plank and concrete blocks, for example.
It's easy to create mods for.

Undying had a far better story line; Max Payne had better playability and control model (Slow mo death!)
And finest engine? Excuse me? Doom had better eye candy; Undying had faaarrr better athmosphere. Half Life was a Jack of all Trades, Master of none (Well... except Havok)

Doom's eye candy suffered two major problems. One, it's all shiny plastic. Two, it does not do outdoors. I preferred H:2.
HL2's atmosphere is different with every level. Each one feels a bit different, plays a bit different.
Max Payne is a third person shooter, with slow mo in. It isn't really comparable to a somewhat more realistic (as far as controls, movement and vehicles go) first person shooter.
Have you played the first Half Life?
