-clears throat- Nat was a very good character his only mistake was not one that he directly made. His mistake is that since he was very young he had been around magicians. He was not aloud to be a kid, when he was around other kids (like the swimming lessons ) they stayed away from him. He read all the time he read about great magicians and being so young he was filled with dreams, like those of Gladstone. He soon found out after the removal of his drawing teacher and than the death of Mrs. Underwood he found that they was nothing 'romantic' of being a magician.

You see very small inklings of Nat's romantic thoughts throughout the book. He had always tried being noble by keeping promises. Whenever he broke one he felt guilty. Bart notices this in the Golem's Eye. He promises Bart to be dismissed if he went on that final mission for him, promise kept. He also promised to get Kitty out of the mess that he got them into in third book. I think the only time he lied and was okay with it was when he told Kitty that he would see her soon after killing Naudo. But that empty promise was made in order to keep the first on in tact.
Nat was a little annoying at times with the way he handled things and he could have been the hero he dreamed of being when he was younger and gazed up at the statue of Gladstone, but he was blinded by power. Which corrupted him. He no longer had the influence of good people like Mrs. Underwood any more which is why when he sees his old teacher again he finally sees what he had become.
Nat is a very important character I wish he had made it threw the last battle. It was quite obvious that he was starting to develop a crush on Kitty and I was curious as to where that would lead and what would happen with England if he was still alive. I was hoping he would be Prime Minister, someone very important, or my all time favorite was that he would step down from his career as a politician. I thought it would have been very noble and showed that he saw the errors of British government and how corrupt it was. His self-sacrifice was just as good and made for a very thought provoking ending.

I was thinking of analyzing Kitty and Bart in the same way I did Nat, but I think that would make this post too long and people might not read it. But here is my second post on this forum :)

I recommended AoS to a friend and I still haven't gotten it back...(doubt if I ever will... ^o) )
I think I forgot my copy of PG in the UK at x-mas....I still have GE though... :D ....(although its my least favorite)...

I think Nat dying was really sad... :'( ... but I doubt there is a more suitable ending... :-/
It was a excellently written ending; however, the dying part was sad. I think Bartimaeus at the ended began to respect Nat just as he did with ptolemy

Oh dear. I've had my friend's copies of GE and PG for over a year now and they're just lying around on my bed somewhere. Hopefully they won't seem to be seriously damaged when I give them back to her.

Anyone who can come up with another good ending, other than Nat dying, would be an insane genius.

It was interesting because in the first book Nat was someone who i just kinda liked. In the second book i really disliked him. And then in the third i really liked him. And then he died!!!! :( *cries*

It was really sad cause its like we watched him grow up, watched him at his worst and at his best. I wish he would have survived somehow..

Life is a bitch. :P
But you do have to realize that the time he put Barty into his body, he was doomed. And he had to put it in his body. Because magicians had restarted the cycle and of course the empire fell.
