How stupid would you have to be to condemn yourself to eternal torment if it was a certainty that that was coming if you didn't believe in him?

:P, because there are conflicting accounts of what he wants. And come on, Pre Renaisance was hardly crime free, even though everyone believed. Face it, when a kid steals from a cookie jar he isn't going to be thinking about Divine Retribution.

I'm assuming that if it's a certainty that he exists, then what he wants can be worked out from that. If it can't, chances are he doesn't care.

You're right, a kid won't be thinking about it. But what about an adult? An adult stealing from a bank, perhaps, who knows with absolute certainty that he will suffer an eternity's torment because of it?

If everybody believed in God, there would still be arguments over what happens if you die, and what sin exactly was, etc etc etc.

I'm not talking about if everyone believed in god. If it is a certainty he exists, then you would believe in him in the same way you believe in food.

If everyone believed in god will it be a better world? No, a more violent one. The Crusades and Jihad comes to mind..

If everyone worships the same god because it is a certainty he exists, you don't get crusades, because there's nobody to crusade against.

Well, it can be argued that the spread of knowledge is quite uneven, you don't ask your mom to discourse on Xeno-Biology, same way a select few are enlighten and the rest of us are ignorant bastards.

But, if there was a certainty he exsisted, some could still choose not to accept it.

If everyone believed in God, it'd be a purely hypothetical situation that has nothing to do with anything. What if everyone was a Zen Buddhist? What if Cthulhu came to my door trying to sell me cleaning equipment?

Hypothetical, yes. If God exists, why are their unbelievers?

I'd say buy the cleaning equipment.
