Oh come on. Even the most unusual name you can think of won't be enough to track you down in any way, shape or form. Even with a surname it doesn't give much away.
And there are only two reasons for not randomly handing out your email address. One is that if there are any idiots reading, they might use it to send you emails with offensive/whatever content, but I'm sure we're all capable of clicking the 'filter as junk' button. The other is to stop spambots finding it and bombarding you, but I should hope most people have capable spam filters anyway.

No Spam filter is perfect.... I've even seen Google's penetrated.

Yeah, the occasional spam mail gets through, especially if you let spambots see your actual address rather than guessing, but you just click 'report spam' and it all works happily again.
Basically, don't refuse to hand out your address to somebody, even though you'd like to, because you're worried about spam or other people. The risks aren't as big as they're made out to be.

He found that guys details pretty quickly!

That was rather different. He had rather more details than an email address or real name already, and retrieved the rest with a rather clever firewall trick. He also knew exactly what he was doing - he was a private investigator after all.

If you're an artist and open for any type of business then you need to give out an e-mail. So, more like always have two or more e-mail addresses.
