Sci-fi and fantasy. Lord of the Rings, the Inheritance trilogy, Dune, The Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy, and The Truth Machine are some favourites, as well as the Bartimaeus trilogy, obviously.

I didn't know it had been written by a fifteen year old until I'd finished it. Besides, he started writing it at fifteen, but was much older when he finished it. It may not be up to LoTR standard, but they're still damn good books.

Find me a book written after 1800 that doesn't use ideas from other books. IMO, the writing is more important than where ideas may or may not have been borrowed from.

yah...
Tithe and Valiant by Holly Black rock, but they're pretty dark (and getting darker. Seems a little above PG-13 sometimes...and they're more girl's books. but hey.) I'm trying to read Eragon right now, but...well. I like the idea behind it, and its not a bad plot, I just...don't like his style maybe? The book just doesn't draw me in, it's been fairly easy to predict so far, and Eragon's such a... an annoying character. I just dislike him. Period. No offense to Inheritance fans, of course. Differet tastes and all that.
"Hey, we've all got problems, chum. I'm overly talkative. You look like a field of buttercups in a suit."
you people should read the wind on fire trilogy

Some of it is too easy to predict, but there are a couple of plot twists that are hard to guess.
And yes, different tastes. :P

The Wind on Fire trilogy is indeed good, but I entirely forgot about it when I was saying what I liked. I do that sort of thing a lot.

It's shocking how few people have actually. And yet everybody (and their dogs, cats, gerbils and other assorted household pets) have read crap like Harry Potter.
