The Ring Of Solomon Discussion

General Discussion
Welcome back folks!
The mass email has been sent? Yeah! Now, hopefully, many will join back.

So does anyone want to speculate on what the book will be about? Will it take place in Solomon's time? Will familiar djinn characters like Farquarl and Queezle show up? What do you guys think?

Also:

Nathanielandbartimaeus, are you a microbiologist? Because so am I, and that would be the weirdest coincidence.

maybe that one Queezel will be the star and bartimaeus will be a secondary character, or she might be a co-star because it HAS to be bartimaeus. Maybe Ptolmey gets the ring of soloman and stuff like that or its in the prague war...
"Smoking kills. If you die, you lose a very important part of your life." - Brooke Shields

"The Earth is the center of the universe." - Ptolemy

"Nothing important happened today." King George's journal on the 4th July, 1776.

"Well, try giving yourself a rude gesture. It just doesn't work, does it?" Bartimaeus, final footnote of his trilogy.

Yah Bartimaeus gets mixed up with the Ring of Solomon. Since it supposedly did something along the lines of mass spirit summoning, I imagine we'll see characters we met in the trilogy.

You know, there's a middle eastern legend where a demon named Sakhr (one of Bart's names!) tricks one of Solomon's concubines into giving him Solomon's ring, and uses it to take over his kingdom. He reigns for forty days, then throws the ring into the ocean. It gets eaten by a fish, which is found by Solomon who has been reduced to a beggar. Solomon then regains his kingdom and tosses Sakhr into a lake. The demon later gets released by a fisherman when he shows up again in Arabian nights.

Maybe the new story will somehow involve this legend?
Bart has mentioned in his footnotes how one time we was trapped in a bottle and floated on the Red Sea for a long time but was finally rescued by a fisherman.

Hey, nice to have someone else doing microbiology here! But are you a microbiologist, as in, you work or do research or something? I'm just studying microbiology. I finished two years of it (BSc). So no, I won't call myself a microbiologist. If I complete my MSc in it, possibly :P. But I'm planning to do molecular biology for my MSc (provided I enter and pass my TYBSc).

And call me n&b. And I see you are a Canadian. We have loads of them here :P .

I hope not cause then you just spoiled the book. Lol jk. But barti hs mentioned that ring a couple times and once he said he through it into an ocean
If that happens, it would seem rather like the Percy Jackson series where the author uses historical myths and modifies them to suit the story.
Anyway, if Bart is the djinn, then Arabian nights definitely wouldn't feature in it. Oh wait, it would be nice to think of the spirit in Arabian Nights as Bartimaues!

That's because Canadians are awesome. ;) I'm still in school too, graduating next semester. Nice to meet you!

Oops! No, actually I think Stroud will probably set the book later than Solomon's time. I'm betting Bart will reference the legend in the footnotes, though.

Actually, that's an interesting question - since this is a prequel, does that mean the story isn't going to be urban fantasy like the rest of the trilogy? If so, the feel of the story would be quite different, I think.
If your view of urban is 10th century urban than yes, it is likely urban fantasy. :P

Welcome, btw. I too am from the magical and wonderful place known as Canada. :D

I've split off the off-topic microbiology discussion into its own thread in General Chat. Come on, guys, this is the discussion thread for the upcoming book, can we at least try and keep this thread of all the ones in the forum on topic?

Brief on-topic bit from one of the split posts:
stuffing wrote:So then do you think the prequel will take place in the tenth century?

I just found this summary on Amazon:
Bartimaeus, everyone's favorite (wise-cracking) djinni, is back in book four of this best-selling series. As alluded to in the footnotes throughout the series, Bartimaeus has served hundreds of magicians during his 5,010 year career. Now, for the first time, fans will go back in time with the djinni, to Jerusalem and the court of King Solomon in 950s BC. Only in this adventure, it seems the great Bartimaeus has finally met his match. He'll have to contend with an unpleasant master and his sinister servant, and runs into just a "spot" of trouble with King Solomon's magic ring...

So it looks like it really will take place in Solomon's time! I betcha that legend I mentioned is going to come into play...

I was going to scoff at the offtopicness, but then I realized that the last few posts were huge.

Hello all, it would appear that all it takes to bring me back to the forum is word of a new book...and possibly the procrastination due to exams. Anyway this is exciting stuff.

By the way, I love what you have done with the place!

EDIT: Wow should probably get around to editing my avatar and sig, or perhaps I should leave them as they are for old time sake.

Hey, it was just a small discussion :'( . it is not often I get to meet people doing microbiology.
Anyway Stuffing, we have got a separate thread for our subject now. But seriously, there isn't much to discuss now Sent.

If you support LD, put up Sent, GS and DC's avie. It would be fun =D.
Oh, just in case that post seems off-topic too;
Are we getting the countdown now? We know the dates.

Oops, sorry for the off-topic discussion, earlier!

I just thought of something: since this book is taking place pre-ptolemy, how is that going to effect Bart's character? I mean, I always had the impression that Ptolemy softened his views toward humans and made him a bit erm...less bloodthirsty than the other spirits. Is he going to be different now? What do you think?
