Well there's no real difference between British and American English. There's just some spelling changes; shouldn't affect comprehension of a book. Styles I find don't vastly change really.
The only real time you should be a bit confused is if you're writing Canadian English (yes it exists) because it (typically) takes both American and British Spelling
Like:
Color (american)/Colour:(British) British version is what we use
Tyre(British)/Tire(American) The american version is what we use.
Yeah, it is the spellings which confuse me. And a few words as to where they belong. And there is Indian English too. I always thought that my English would never match that because most of the English I learnt was through reading books of Western authors and through my studies (where the language is too formal to be different). And also the fact that I very seldom speak English. So I was really surprised to go through the Wikipedia page on Indian English and see how similar it was to mine. I never knew some of the words I used often were Indian English words. I thought they were British or something.
Ah well, I think English is a great language that way. Every major country seems to have its own version of it and it can no longer be said to belong to UK, USA or anything. And, for me, though English ought to be something like my 3rd language (or 2nd possibly. No idea), I read and write best in English. Because I went to an English-medium school and now I am in an English-medium college. So, in a way, it seems like my native language.
