The 7 Planes

But that's not true.
You see more of a lowly imp on the seventh than the second, each plane reveals more about the world's nature, without relation to it's power.

Yes, I see what you mean. That would be the correct way to phrase it.
When I set out from the boy's attic window, my head was so full of competing plans and complex strategems that I didn't look where I was going and flew straight into a chimney.

Something symbolic in that. It's what fake freedom does for you.
Aren't there more than 7 planes though?

I remember somewhere at the start of AoS Bart says that there are 7 planes but whoever operates on more is just showing off....
Yeah, there are more planes but Bart doesn't have them. I'm sure they serve a better purpose than what Bart would tell us.

I was under the imression he was making a joke... I don't think there are more than seven planes. But there are higher things than Marids, so you never know.

Rammy made "the planes close to the rift suddenly went out of sync, as if they were being pulled sideways at varying speeds." He transcends mere plane levels. :P

I'm pretty sure more than seven planes do exist, and Barti's just embarrassed cos he can't see them. (The mercenary says he sees seven planes, mind..)

Seven major ones, with Seven League Boots operating on the (hypothetical, mind you) eighth.
That's what he says in the books.
I think the SLB actually operate on a sub plane or in between, rather than on an eighth.

This supposed eighth plane is (as Bartimaeus says) hypothetical. Just speculation. As for the 7 League Boots, I don't think they would operate on the normal 7 planes (due to their ability to ignor the rules of time and dimension), but I don't know what the hell a "sub-plane" or "in between planes" is supposed to mean either (Dansariki). My guess is that the boots do operate on the hypothetical 8th plane, or maybe they are just magical artefacts that can do what they do by disregarding the planes altogether.

No, because they're made with Djinn sowed into them, they have to be governed by the planes.
Typo, whether -> rather.
Well... maybe they're in between a plane.
Could mean extra abilities, or stretching of the laws of physics.
Well, their version, anyways.

Well as I said, if not disregarding the 7 planes all together then they must operate on higher.

Feh.
I suppose so, it just seems more likely not.

About the tentacles:

I hope this was not already mentioned.

I'm pretty sure Barty's 7th plane form involves little or no tentacles; the tentacles are a reference to Faquarl's form.

I've always envisioned Faquarl's true form to be like this:http://1.bp.blogspot.com/__RuP2uZFqD0/R ... lhu6_s.jpg
"Give me back my face!" "Look at that sunset. Like blood and melted cheese."

The tentacles were indeed in reference to Faquarl, Bart said:
"I'm no great looker myself, but Faquarl has too many tentacles for my taste."

And I'm assuming that the part in the book when Barty says that "there is something with tentacles behind you right now" is also Faquarl.

No, that's in Golem's Eye, when Bart is recapping the whole idea of planes.
And, as I do:
"Higher being (such as me) can use inner eyes to see al planes at once, but more lowly creatures much make do with fewer. Humans are remarkably lowly. Magicians use contact lenses to see up to three, but most only see the first plane, making them ignorant on all magical activity. For example, there could be something invisible with lots of tentacles hovering behind you right NOW."

Or something like that, someone go look it up for me.

Corroberated. P. 2 in Golem's Eye. Typos in yours, so for the sake of neatness:

"Higher beings (such as me) can use inner eyes to observe planes at once, but more lowly creatures have to make do with seeing fewer. Humans are remarkably lowly. Magicians use contact lenses to see planes two to three, but most people only see the first plane, and this makes them ignorant on all magical activity. For example, there's probably something invisible with lots of tentacles hovering behind your back right NOW."

Who didn't turn around when they read that?

I didn't turn around. After all, it's invisible.

I'm impressed by the accuracy of Dansariki's recall of that quote..

So am I, I thought I was more off.
And yeah, when I don't pay attention my spelling and grammar go off in both typing and speaking.

And I didn't, I just smiled.

I whipped around, only to find a broken copy of Great Expectations staring glumly back at me.

And Dansarinki- did you memorize the book or something?
