I can tell what that link is without mousing over.

It's cool that this is getting lots of media attention, but for crying out loud, please don't call it the 'God Particle'

I haven't actually seen "God partcle" in the media that much this time around. Maybe all the scientists complaining about that name have finally got through.

The funny thing is that no one I've talked to has even mentioned it.

No one has even posted it or mentioned it on facebook. Presumably to not look like a nerd or geek but to be honest based on other posts most people's images are already ruined.

If I had twitter, I'm sure there would be very little response to it.

Your social circle sucks. People have been talking about it everywhere I hang out.

XD

A week ago when they were talking about it on the front page of one of the local papers, they referred to it as "The God Particle." I laughed because it bugs people so much, it probably makes me a horrible person but whatever. They did a decent job of explaining it though, if that's any consolation. But really the media does this all the time, try and simplify things as much as possible, often sacrificing sense/other viewpoints to do so. Plus Higg's Boson does sound vaguely silly.

My social circle is mostly art students, so they just look at me like I'm crazy when I talk about stuff like this. :P

I'm actually kinda concerned about how little discussion there is. I mean, it's not just my social circle. The media here in North America is fairly stifled. There are news articles about it, but that's mainly online. The newspapers here have very little discussion and the media shows on television from talk shows to reliable news broadcasters have had almost no coverage of it.

I think we have had a little more coverage than that here. But hardly anything to feel happy about. And the quality is poor. >>

My social circle is somewhere in between yours and Sent's. >>

*sigh* People, this is why research is important.

@Nero, a big part of that is the huge anti-intellectual bias in the States. Then there's the Canadian media, which seems mainly concerned with reiterating just how hot the weather is right now... But as I said, it did get at least get a front page mention in my local newspaper last week, so it's not totally hopeless. I've also heard it discussed in some of the magazines I read/podcasts I listen to.

A question was posed on reddit today that interested me:

We've come up with all these great advances in science and medicine, why can't we rebuild tooth enamel yet?

n&b, you're a biologist, right? Your thoughts?

edit: grammar
I am a geneticist. I majored in microbiology and genetics, not biology as a whole. And both don't have anything to do with teeth. So I have little idea why we can't rebuild tooth enamel. But I read that alkaline and nutritious diet could help rebuild it naturally. And acidic food could destroy it. Because enamel mostly consists of minerals right?
There are many things in the world which one thinks should be doable given our recent advances in all fields, but once one looks at the intricacies of it, it becomes obvious that there are many things out there that we don't understand.

Am I going to hell because my first thought when I saw the facepalms was they had the same formatting as a noob triforce?

Haha xD. I wouldn't have seen it if you hadn't pointed it out. :P
And, don't worry, in our world, there is no hell.

Are you sure about that? I had to watch the second Twilight film in theatres.

I actually have no idea what that means, so I doubt it.

Oh man, that's bad. (Hey, what happens if you talk in the theatre while watching Twilight?)

I have the urge to go to Twilight and watch a different movie on my laptop. And somehow avoid being kicked out.
