Libya's going to hell in a handbasket. I don't think Gaddafi can possibly remain in power after this, but I fear the number of lives that will be lost before it's over. And there's protests going on all over the region, with varying degrees of severity of response.

Gaddafi doesn't give a damn. He WANTS to hold on to his seat of power and will do anything to keep it. His diplomats, officials and even army are defecting but he doesn't care as long as he's the last one standing.

There's containment problems at the Fukushima Nuclear Plant
1000x radiation in the area, 20,000 people evacuated, hours until meltdown. It could apparently be worse than Chernobyl D:

Nuclear emergency has been declared at one more plant too. But thankfully, nothing has happened so far.

The quoted expert is, fortunately, quite correct. This isn't the next Chernobyl by any means. At worst, an expensively broken reactor and power shortages with low-level level radiation leaks. Messy and unfortunate but not a major disaster.

And there was radiation leakage too: http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/03/ ... SS20110312
But yeah, it seems a small thing.

I'm relieved to know then, that, at least, there will be no big nuclear problems.
Wow, the situation is terrible. :(
Also, this.

EDIT: No way. I just watched the news. Seems like a nuclear power plant exploded.

Yes it did. I had put the link up in my previous post.
I am annoyed with several people now. With those Greenpeace activists who seem to be popping up everywhere and taking this opportunity to lecture people about the dangers of nuclear plants now (can't they wait?), with those scaremongers and with those who believe that this earthquake and tsunami was all because of the supermoon.

Yeah, it's not clear what caused the explosion, but it doesn't appear to have breached nuclear containment, so it's no increased radiation risk, just more to clean up.

The supermoon bullcabbage is the most ridiculous crap of this whole affair. It's a few miles closer than it usually gets. Whoop-de-flooping 'ecking-do.

I second that notion. What are people gonna predict next, that flaming chihuahuas shall rain from the skies? Really, the whole notion of foretelling future calamities and attributing ongoing ones to such trivial things as a big hunk of rock is a waste of time in my mind.
