Im a member of the young librel's (I.E. Librel democrat light) ill have you know, its just that labour used to be such a good thing, when it was proper labour, sticking up for rights of man ect. now its just full of courupted silly old men who are just as in touch with the out side world as a fish is with air..... such a waste. In Canada, you can vote in party elections before you can vote legally in federal elections.

I should really join the Liberal Party. But I'm 18 in less than a year, so it's pretty pointless now... and if I had voted, Ignatieff was the only candidate.

Blair was getting increasingly unpopular due to criticism over, amongst other things, the Iraq War. Labour only narrowly won the previous election, and pressure was mounting for him to resign, so he did so.
Blair selected Brown as his successor, presumably because he'd done fairly well as Chancellor of the Exchequer for Blair's entire term. The Prime Minister is not an elected post; we elect a party, who get to select their leader however they like.
Unfortunately for the Labour party, Brown turned out to be worse than Blair. Oops.
