Actually, criminals do get guns.
US has one of the largest black markets outside of Africa and China.

Well yes, the whole guns being legal thing makes that easy.. gun running is much harder when guns are illegal.

Sorry if I sound really naive about the gun stuff, but can anyone buy a gun? I suppose criminals might be barred, but what about the rest? Just provide some details & get off with a gun?

Depends on the state as to the precise laws, but generally if you're not a convicted felon you can, with a small amount of paperwork, get a gun. Someone in the US recently, in one of the few states that requires gun licenses at all, acquired a license for his young baby, which shows exactly how many checks are made.. Most states don't need licenses at all. See this.

Thanks again. It was pretty interesting (though I read the first 3 paras only.....too big). I read about the child getting a gun in US recently, came in the newspapers. Quite unbelievable.

There was an eight year old boy very recently who shot dead his father and their lodger.

An 8 yr old boy shot his father? Didn't hear of that. Am I right in presuming the gun belonged to the father & not the child?

8-Year-Old Accused Of Dad's Slay In Court

They don't say that the boy owned a gun outright, but they sort of imply that he either owned one, or his father taught him how to shoot one.

Thanks fuzzylobster! I read the article- it was scary! It did seem he planned it all-hopefully his father abused him. Otherwise, its too a big crime for someone so young. I hope he is not tried in an adult court, better put him in a juvenile one & counsel him.

And that, right there, is a perfectly good reason on its own for gun control. Better neither the criminal nor the victim are armed than both are armed. (Please don't try the "but criminals get guns anyway!" crap. Very, very few do. If they have the resources to acquire weaponry then having your own is not going to help you; better you're unarmed and surrender than you try and fight and get shot.)

And yes, funnily enough, governments govern.
Are you implying that (fire)armed victims in this situation are only attacked by (fire)armed criminals?

Yes, governments govern. Here, they do it with the consent of the people.

In a land where everyone has guns, being a criminal who doesn't would be a pretty silly idea (not that that's any guarantee of safety if an armed person is attacked by a less well-armed criminal; just cos you *have* a gun doesn't mean you can use it successfully.. maybe you panic, maybe you can't shoot straight, maybe it breaks, maybe you can't draw it in time, maybe you get jumped from a blindspot or you don't realise their intentions until they're too close..).

*cough*Iraq war*cough* And yes, funnily enough, ours governs with the consent of the people (most of the time) just like yours does (most of the time). See all the mass protests in this country demanding the removal of gun control?
Oh.
Right.
There aren't any. Most of us are in favour of it.

Or those who aren't don't have a voice, but that is neither here nor there.
Please refrain, the two of you, from making this a US v. UK discussion.
We're off-topic enough as it is.
Yes, having a gun does not mean you're invincible, but it does, in many cases, help.
Not all, but some of them.
Either way, it can act as something of a deterent, but it's debatable if that's a good thing.

Oh shut up, I get to play responsible one every once in awhile.
There were stricter limits on weapons, due to the Assault Weapons ban thingy, but It expired in '94.
It's still illegal for many things, and a use of a gun in crime is punished severely.

I'm reviving this thread

Me

Me and Erin a year ago, terrible pic but only one on photobucket

me getting pissed of in chem last year

btw I do shave allot more now than in that second pic, was preforming rooster in the school production of Annie, added to my sleeze value
Asked Erin if I could post some of hers and shes only letting me put her arty ones up

moving them from her deviant art to my photobucket for the purpose of posting was annoying to say the least
Mindi Jackson , I think I'm in love. Now I just need to get famous.
Ahhhh! The page! It stretches!

Something tells me you don't want the answer to that...

Or 7P's just overreacting. Which is probably more likely.

I don't have a recent one, but here's my myspace one:

'course, my hair's longer, and I keep it straightened most of the time. And I look nicer.
Geez, I just realized I don't particularly like that pic.
Edit: nice pic, Asmoral. ;)
Nice apple, Erin. (Much easier than VoR)
