I hated that he made Nat waste time to go to the dumb plays and parties. It's like he cared more about himself than the country. Although that seems to be in the magician code of conduct.

Well, yes and no. Though most magicians are in for themselves, most ministers were ticked off about the parties. They wanted to get something done.
