Golem's Eye

New topic, because I've done a lot of art for this book and there is more in progress.

I'm going to upload in a chronologic order - from the prologue to the last chapter. Therefore older and newer drawings are somewhat jumbled.

pg. 21 - Nubbin from the prologue of Golem's Eye - he's just one of these minor characters I couldn't forget.

cute frog-Djinni

pg. 41 - Kitty watching SWANS OF ARABY. At her place, I'd made exactly the same face :D

bored Kitty

pg. 49 - Kitty & a sullen Jakob at school

Kitty & Jakob at school

pg. 64 - Kitty & Jakob on that fateful day on the bridge. It's my very first drawing for Golem's Eye and the lines are somewhat awkward, but I still like the composition.

Best friends

OMG, they are awesome! I really, really like them. Looking forward for the rest.

@nathanielandbartimaeus: Thank you for the nice comments.

Here the next art dump:

pg. 85 - Nathaniel entering Sholto Pinn's destroyed shop, treading delicately to avoid getting too much brick dust on his patent leather shoes :D I just love this foppish boy.
That one is one of my favourite older drawings. I particularly like the hair: When reading the book, I imagine Nat's eyes hidden behind a lot of hair. But to draw his expressions properly, I have to draw his hair partially out of his face.

a man's character shows from the kind of shoes he wears

pg. 115 - "He put on a slightly pained expression: he was either attempting to be solemn or had bad indigestion - exactly which was hard to say."

Nathaniel thinks that this is a solemn expression

pg. 116 - "The boy gave that old familiar thin-lipped smile that I'd known and disliked so heartily two years before."

Thin-liped smile
Call me n&b please :D .
The drawings are again amazing, but doesn't Nat seem a bit too big for his age? His face seems older than it to be (I think). Otherwise, it is absolutely fine.

@ n&b: Sometimes I think, that he looks too young. I really don't want him too look to much like a child. It's interesting that you think that he looks to old.

pg. 178 - Bartimaeus in the form of a macho Minotaur sneaking after the Golemn, pretending to do a great job in pursuing him. Here he is sneaking around a corner to make sure that the Golem has left before he enteres the next room. He wouldn't want to catch the Golem after all ;p

Sneaking after the Enemy

pg. 186 - Eventually, he has to face the enemy. He's standing on Sobek's head, but you don't see a lot of it.

Facing the Enemy

Why are you so awesome. Nat does look a smidgeon old for his age in Golem's eye, BUT HIS HAIR BUH. I'm ADORING what you've been doing with this <3

Keep drawing I'm so stoked to see more~

@footnoodles: 2 vs. 1 - OK, I'm going to keep it in mind. The drawings I've uploaded so far are all from the first 20 pieces I've done. I'm going to start with no. 41 this evening (a blushing Nathaniel having a drink with Farrar) and Nat has changed a bit since no. 20. I'm getting better :) But I'm going to take care to make his face slightly younger.

pg. 193 - Nat waiting to hear something from Bart. He's under pressure because the other magicians want him to be the scapecoat for the mysterious attacks. Nat has has to clasp his hands to stop them shaking. I really admire him in that scene.

never show weakness

pg. 195 - Nat & an upside down Bart. The perspective is somewhat messed up, but I like the cat :D

upside down

pg. 268 - Nat in Prague, interested in the fact that Bart has met Gladstone. I think that he looks younger here, hence I'm going to dedicate him to n&b and footnoodles. I don't like him too much. I've been drawing him without really knowing what I wanted to draw. Not sure about the expression. But at this point (drawing no. 19) I've eventually decided what to do with his tie: It's inspired by a photograph of a black and white designer tie - very stylish and perfect for Natty-boy :D

Natty-boy
I really admire your perseverance. And you even care about stuff like a designer tie! It's all very inspiring. How much time does it take you to do a drawing? And doesn't it ever bother you to draw the same person again and again?

PFFFHAHAHAH THE CAT YES

You're really good at drawing a single character several times, that's an awesome skill to have.
periwinkle Mouler
@footnoodles - that skill is actually a trained one: I've probably drawn Nat over a hundred times - in form of stupid little sketches in empty minutes at work, on the bus, in the train ... maybe I should scan some of the earliest sketches. He looked very different in the beginning and it took a long time until I knew how to draw him.

@n&b - and that partially explains why it is not boring to draw a character over and over again. It's just training. Now I know how to draw Nat & Bart, and I don't feel like drawing these portraits and expressions anymore and prefer to draw them in scenes interacting with other people. I've started with easy ones, because I've not drawn a lot last year and didn't draw with a pencil for 2 or 3 years.

274 - Nat & Bart on that graveyard in Prague. I just love the whole episode in Prague!

Nat & Bat

280 - Nat & that unhygienic candle. I think that it is a hand of glory.

Unhygienic candle

282 - Nat sitting on a gravestone and rubbing his eyes. For some reason, this is one of my favourite sketches.

Tired Nat
Oooh, I love the pose in the last one.

Also, I want his hat.

Yes, that hat. And it is nice to see your image of that candle.

A sketch I've done today/yesterday: That eccentric afrit from the prologue that looks like a weedy Roman with oversized sword. I imagined one of these gothic/fantasy swords that can't possibly be of any use in a real battle - eccept to chop off your own head or something like that. The "toga in late empire-style" drove me almost crazy: it was very hard to find a proper reference picture. That style is draped vertically over the breast while the early empire-style is draped diagonal over the breast .... That the character wears the toga over his naked body is artistic freedom - that was only common in the time of the Roman Republic. But it's so much more lascivious ;p OK, end of history lesson. I'm very fond of the style of this afrit. I wonder if it is Honorius - the form is certainly crazy enough.

Eccentric Afrit
Haha. It is a good history lesson.
Again, a nice drawing. I like the eyes and the hair. The sword could have come out better, I think. It is a bit uneven.

Back to older art:

Kitty meeting the mysterious benefactor in the theatre. I really like that haircut, but I don't now yet how to draw it in front view. The poniard looks like a rather roughly done butcher knife and not something from the Borgias. But well, first attempt to draw a weapon.

I glad that I'm getting better at drawing Kitty - I'm not speaking about this early drawing, but about the two drawings I've done yesterday and today.

threatened with an ugly knife

Nat and Bart in Prague - Bart's shield doesn't work against silver bullets and Nat is all sarcastic about it.

and what sort of shield do you call this

Nat and Bart after climbing these steps up the hill in Prague. Nat is completely out of shape and Bart is gloating. Drawing Nat's expression was a lot of fun :D

completely out of shape

Bart illustrates Nat's pompous speech. pg. 324 "I warn you," the boy went on. "I am a magician of great power. I control many terrifying entities. This being you see before you" - here I rolled my shoulders back and puffed my chest up menacingly - "is but the meanest and least impressive of my slaves." (Here I slumped my shoulders and stuck my stomach out.)

I'm rather proud of the outcome, particularly since I had no reference picture for the second drawing.

the least impressive of nat's terrifying slaves

Aaah, I always love when you post. I really adore your style <3

Bart's poses in that mockery Nat's speech are delightful. Expecially for no reference, you're so pro. : D
Yeah, Nat's expression in "out of shape" is just great.

Yes, I loved Nat's expression and I think Kitty too looks very nice. Big eyes. I like those. And Bart's reactions to Nat's speech is great.
Oh, I think you are awesome! Such brilliant drawing and such dedicated work. I suppose, at the end of it all, your drawings would say the whole story. With the captions. 'Cause, at this rate, you will draw everything there is to do. Ever tried drawing Nouda or any of the other spirits?

You know what? Your drawings have really grown on me.
periwinkle Mouler
Thank you all for the nice comments, they mean a lot to me :D

About drawing Nouda ... not now. I've this project to illustrate Golem's Eye - my favourite book - and I want to do at least 100 drawings. At the moment I'm at no. 49. I'm going to stick to that project and not draw for any other book. But later I'd like to draw the one or other scene from the first and the third book.

I've had an artist block for over two years and when I started to draw again last december, I had difficulties with a simple portrait. I'm much better now and work at more complicated poses and two characters interacting somehow. I've never been particularly good at drawing nonhuman beeings, hence there is a long way to go until I'm going to be able to draw something like Nouda ...

But requests are a good idea: If you want to see a particular scene from the second book, please tell me. Illustrating them would be a nice challenge.

pg. 388 - Nathaniel's patented bulldow-who's-sat-on-a-thistle face. From all Nat expressions I've drawn, this is my favourite: I think it fits the description.

funny expression

Still pg. 388 - Nat talking confidently to Bart during the mass summons, before Tallow got killed.

Just one upload left, then I'm going to upload the actual drawings from March. Uploading takes so much time ... does anyone know how I can upload drawings directly in this thread? It would be easier for me, if I wouldn't have to upload everything on DA first and you wouldn't have to leave this forum all the time to see them. When I press the "Image" button, you can't see the drawing in the thread, I've tried.
