should bartimaeus be promoted

yes
no
^^^^^ at the most he should become a higher lovl djinn
ok.....
I don't think he should be promoted, just simply because the limitations of his djinn status force him to think instead of using just brute force.

yeah, he would get a crappy personality.
'"That's right," I said "Me. What, did you think that I'd be all nice and quiet for you? Think again, sonny. There are two of us in this body now. Check this out."
To prove my point I lifted one of his fingers and methodically picked his nose. He uttered a squawk of protest. "Stop that!"'
I lowered the arm. "That's not all I can do if I put your mind to it"'

-Bartimaeus

it is more interresting to read if he isnt all powerfull, he nead to outsmart his enemies, stronger foes, that is entertainment
I am Bartimaeus, Sakhr al-Jinni!! I am N'gorso the Mighty, and the SERPENT OF SILVER PLUMES!! I have spoken with Solomon, and rebuilt the walls of Uruk, Karnak and Prague!!

And watching him get his ass kicked because of it.

He'd still use them because they help us see his multiple thoughts at the same time. They might be less entertaining, but they would still be there.

The footnaotes were hilarious. It would be really sad if he stopped them.

But he wouldn't.

They'd just be different.

Footnotes were an interesting concept... did Stroud read the Discworld series?

Probably. Discworld is one of the big fantasy series, after all.

Barti say in AoS something like "Ha! Intelligence trimuphs over brute strength any day of the week!" when he outsmarts Farquarl. Part of Bartimaeus's charm is that he thinks he's amazing, when he's really just average but intelligent. He wouldn't really be himself anymore if he was an afrit or a marid. Maybe he'll regain a lot of his previous strength if he's not summoned for a while (because he's supposed to be dead.)

I got the impression that he only said that because he wasn't strong. And personally, I think his intelligence or strength doesn't define him as much as his ego and sense of humour.
Personally, I doubt that the promotions are even possible. I admit, it would be cool if he was promoted, but it's an improbability. As for there being more books than just the trilogy, I would LOVE for that to happen. I don't want to accept that there are only 3 books. After all, the stories go on long after the author is finished writing.

Wow this thread was like nonexsistant until June 9. Well, I think Barti should be promoted but it's not possible.
Seemed to me that Disc was pretty huge in influencing his writing. I mean even the humour has a Pratchetty vibe. Stroud has his strengths but I've to say Pratchett is better at that kind of random and sardonic humour. He was the original. DW and BT aren't the only books with footnotes...Vanity Fair (very boring classic who's interestingly by a guy with Makepeace in his name :D) and Jonathan Strange. Maybe it's an English tradition?

I don't really get djinni and promotion. Wouldn't there be a boss thingy somewhere?
Nothing to see here, move along.

Of course, everyone gets influenced by the masters.

'cept HDM, pretty original, but the author, whatshisname is a prune.

Maybe the boss would be like the creator or something. Like God.

I voted no. Barti wouldn't be himself if he wasn't a djinni. Every level of spirits seems to have it's own kind of personality.

I think they're more varied then that, but yeah. To get promoted would be stupid.
