Yes, Underwood was a good example of incompetence dressed up as genius.

But having him run around his office would give me bad images.

And I didn't find Kitty undeveloped at all. But I like the characters like Underwood, Whitwell, and the PM more as characters because they're entirely believable.

They're all believable. That's what makes Jon such a good writer.

I hate Mary Sues, they're the bane of my existence. And the characters that are based on a character that's actually decent except they change everything about it except the name.

Example: a Hermione that straightens her hair, joins the Quidditch team, suddenly looks like a supemodel, wears tight clothes...

If lititure=literature, then I think I can safely say that characters in literature are never just 'virtuous heroes'. Now when I think about it Kitty does seem a bit Mary-Sueish. Why did Stroud have to mention her prettiness so much? She'd have been attractive in my imagination anyway, but coming from the author it just makes her seem more 2-D.

I think Nouda and Rammy from the first book were pretty boring villains. Honorius on the other hand was just cool.

Ramuthra was good - raw power, uncertain about the world, and a completely different obstacle from most djinn.
Nouda was a little boring, because he was trapped in a human body.

I thought they were all good, but hey, that's just me.

She might seem a little Mary-Sueish, but she has her faults too. Like she's uneducated and naive. And unlike most Sues Bartimaeus would not bow to her proposal with gladness like he would have in an instant in fanfiction. And she did lose her prettiness. After the gate.
