Actually 'a lego' is proper, because it is meant to refer one brick of plastic designed and manufactured by LEGO.

No it isn't. The common use of "Legos" or "a Lego" in the US is incorrect. Check it out - page 19 (PDF warning!).

If there are lots of bricks it's referred to as Lego.
If there is only one brick, it's a Lego brick/piece.
The manufacturers don't get to decide how their product is referred to.
