Why is the war in Afganistan not fought by the UN forces? If it's going to be fought under the American banner, you can't expect most countries to lend support.

I always thought the UN was a puppet in the hands of the US. And some of the NATO countries too. Suddenly, the UN discovered it could function on its own?

The UN's never been a US puppet, it just doesn't have the power to rein in America's antics. NATO is more arguable.

Plus all their forces come from nation contributions; the UN has no singular army of its own.

If they waited for permission for some of the missions, they would have been complete failures (e.g. Rwanda massacre); I think that if the UN has solid evidence that human rights are being broken, they may interfere without permission
