Your hero/idol

What would you consider to be a hero? Someone who does great deeds, honorably, though great obstacles, and leave a great legacy?

Who, would be your hero? And why?
I think someone who sticks to what he/she feels is right and refuses to buckle down before others, come what may, is a hero. The person doesn't have to leave behind a great legacy. It could very well be a person who none of us have heard of. Also, I feel a person who saves or protects someones life, esp. if endangering theirs in the process, is also a hero.
As to who and why, I will reply later. After reading what the others say.

Anyone who follows their ideals, within reason.
Terrorists, by the strictest interpretation of the above, are some of the greatest heroes of mine.
But, no. I give them credit where credit be due - they're dedicated.

I have no hero, only those I like.
My Girlfriend, with her philosophy so well coinciding with mine, counts.
A friend, whom I can go to at any point, who is like that for all he knows, counts.
My father, expert in all things sound and most electrical, somewhat counts. His drinking negates it a little, but having overcome meth at an early age brings it up again.
Another friend, Jacob, who plans to follow his dream of directorship, leaving behind all he needs to, counts.

Mine's kind of fairytale, I suppose. Lemme think a bit, see if I can come up with something better.

Terrorists are heroes to some, without doubt. Okay yeah, so possibly I should add that the person who I consider a hero should have a somewhat similar ideology.
A person can be a hero in so many ways that if one starts to type down all that, they will never finish.
