I heard that Brutal Legend wasn't particularly fun.

I've heard reports ranging from "good but the RTS bits aren't very good" to "BEST THING EVAR". I shall almost certainly be getting it when I get back home. (Unless I haven't finished Dragon Age by that point.)

*two characters. And yes, it is fun. Not very deep, but fun.

Heh, I love Rooster Teeth.
That comic does bring something to light: I hope metal doesn't suddenly suffer the "Guitar Hero" popularity-rise effect.

Gods forbid it should be MAINSTREAM or anything crap like that, huh?

Frankly, I don't care if something's popular, I care if it's good. Led Zeppelin were ridiculously popular in their day; they're awesome. Even Iron Maiden topped charts. Of course, there is and always has been plenty of stuff that's popular and awful, and plenty of stuff that's unpopular and awful. Hell, quite a lot of the modern music I listen to is popular, though not necessarily in this country - take Muse or Nightwish, popular here and in central/northern Europe respectively.

The point is, popularity won't consign metal to the crap bin.

While I agree, it should be pointed out that many bands/artists conform to the majority's wants than what they think they uniquely should produce. Or redo a similar song in different lyrics.

Nobody's forcing you to listen to the rubbish ones, popular or not.

Amen.
I know quite a few people that stop listening to bands who becomes 'mainstream', whereas I just look at them and go "They're still good, though."
Another thing is sellout. Recently had a friend (who doesn't like KISS anyways) who highlighted their sellout status.
I don't give a damn; I've heard the same stuff about Metallica too, and I like both.
All of Metallica (Reload and St. Anger dipped a little low, though), and a good deal of KISS (don't have their discography yet).

God Called In Sick Today - AFI (Black Sails in the Sunset)

Another band I've heard people say they stopped listening to due to popularity.
If it's because they've changed, alright, but just because the guy next to you like 'em, doesn't mean you shouldn't.

I've never liked KISS, and I think Metallica sucked after the Black Album (I don't really like ...And Justice For All either), but those are musical criticisms, not popularity ones. I wouldn't like to speculate about whether Metallica's turn for the worse was really selling out or a legitimate if misguided musical change, but even if it was selling out, just because some bands do it doesn't mean they all will.
