Metal's an enormously diverse genre. Everything from big, spacey instrumentals (someone knocked on my door while I was playing Isis earlier and went "...is that Shostakovich?") to raw noise (I don't really like the more extreme end of black/death metal myself).

Sometimes screamed/growled vocals can be good (see Isis, Opeth). If they're overused or if the band sucks, however, they're bad.
