Tolkien was said to be long winded at best when LOTR was published. Steph. Meyer's is... infamous. Stephen King is reknown for his ability in horror (or something like that).

What style of writing do you like? What appeals to you, makes for easier or more enjoyable reading?

Well one particular style that stands out for me is something like Daniel Handler's. He can take on the more heavy topics such as incest, teen violence, etc and work them in an ironic, comical, absurdest fashion. Plus he has nice wordplay. :)

Oh and Daniel Handler is also Lemony Snicket, in case you didn't know.

Other authors of recognition would be Christopher Moore and Douglass Adams. I just like things twisty I suppose.

I don't have any clear favourites that I can think of at the moment, but I really hate Gregory Maguire's style. I don't know why, but he just makes me angry.

The excess pontification maybe? Like, he just sticks it in there to seem smart?

I still like his stuff, though it bothers me when he does that sometimes.

I like Douglas Adams and Jonathan Stroud's humour the best. And their writing is clearly awesome too.
I like Shakespeare's for a completely different reason.
I do not like Tolkien's style though. He describes everything in too much detail.

I actually love Tolkien's style. That ultra-description is great.

Builds better images? Never try Tolkien at eight. Made it twenty pages, tops.

Bible does pretty well on word play, but I suppose a lot gets lost in translation from five languages.

I was about eight or nine when I first read the Lord of the Rings. Read the whole of the Fellowship of the Ring in a day. (Didn't do much else that day.)

Well, how much detail about the story did you remember after reading it in a day?

My dad was always convinced I read so fast I couldn't possibly take everything in, so he started testing me on books I'd just read. He rapidly realised the only questions I couldn't answer were along the lines of "what's the third word on the ninth page" and gave up.

Oh gosh. Some reader you are. I have a cousin who does that; she just flicks through the pages but manages to read everything properly. If I read that fast, I would be skipping words here and there and would probably not concentrate on it much.
