Why does everyone love him? Sure, I know the reasons why he's great: He started the epic fantasy genre, he codified all the various clinche's peopled have usedd this past century, ect ect.

But the books themselves haven't aged gracefully. They are not enjoyable reading.

eh.
I agree, because out of books I re-read, they aren't high on the list at all.
With my memory, that's not too bad, but I've read the trilogy three times or so...
I'm used to re-reading cabbage, I don't get new books that often.

Personally, I like his prose, though I can see why others would not.

Reading the books is a Herculean task. It's so descriptive, it eats my head. I have read the first book of LOTR, but I can't proceed.

I loved LotR the first time I read it (must have been almost a decade ago now - I'd read the books a couple of times by the time the first film came out in 2001). I've re-read it a fair few times and still like it. Haven't done it in a while though, so maybe my views would change..

Yup. I can't remember how old exactly I was when I first read it, but it was a couple of years before the first film came out (was 11 at the film's launch, by the way).

I read the Hobbit when I was...
Ten, when the latter two of the three came out.
The LOTR came soon after... maybe 12 or 13, for all of it.

Hey! I was about 10. Halfway through the second though, I got distracted and stopped. I never had much problem with understanding the writing (most of it), but I never really cared much for them either way.

So you read the book when you were around 9! You comprehended? My English was so bad then, I was stuck with Enid Blyton.

Well, I am a native speaker, which gives me a bit of an advantage, but yes.

Even for a native speaker it's remarkable.

I might be wrong, but I remember reading somewhere that they popularized by the hippie counterculture movement or something.

Edit: nvm, didn't properly read first post

Yes, goosebumps! But they were never scary.
