The Sandman by Neil Gaiman?

Book Discussion
Hi! I just wanted to ask, is there anyone here who is also a great fan of the Sandman series? :) I love it, but there are some parts that I don't like. For instance, I was totally mystified (not to mention a little bit disappointed) when Gaiman suddenly inserted the Justice League in his graphic novel. It just didn't fit with the whole theme of the story! It shatters the dream-like quality. :hmm: I know, he's being contracted by DC, and he needs to incorporate the DC characters in his story, but he should have done it more subtly. Even if that part only took one panel in the graphic novel, i was totally disappointed, I couldn't get it off my mind. :( Didn't ruin my love for Sandman though. :D I would love to share Sandman insights with you! :)

Big Sandman fan here.

It was set in the DC universe, and featured everything from fairly major appearances by Constantine and references to Arkham Asylum to tying up the previous "Sandman" characters into the narrative. Mostly this happened in the first few stories anyway, when it was still finding its feet, and some reference points for existing comics fans were useful. I don't remember the particular bit you're talking about, but I'm not a big comics fan in general; just read some classics.

A still more glorious dawn awaits, not a sunrise, but a galaxy rise, a morning filled with 400 billion suns - the rising of the Milky Way
That part when Morpheus is asking the three weird sisters about his tools, and one said that a certain john dee took possession of his ruby, but the justice league took care of him and brought him to an asylum.. And yes it only happened in the first parts of the story.. Yes I guess that makes it find its footing in the comics world.. Particularly in DC.. But still it's weird to find superheroes in underpants with Morpheus in dark cape and all... In my opinion they don't fit together.. I just can't imagine them in a single universe

The Sandman universe is basically a multiverse that includes all manner of stories, myths and legends. The comics themselves draw heavily on Greek mythology, but that's certainly not the only stuff that appears. Arguably, superheroes is just another mythology that shows up.

Point taken. :D You're absolutely right. I guess I just didn't count DC superheroes as valid mythology. And you're right, they are. But still, after some serious chat with the mysterious three sisters, it's really weird to find superheroes suddenly popping out into the story. I don't know, I find it funny! :D Pretty much ruins the seriousness of the moment. But aside from that, I really love Sandman. :D
Sandman is one of my favourite comics series ever. Have you read the spinoff series Lucifer? also excellent. Another similar comic is Hellboy by Mike Mignola, from Dark Horse Comics. Chock full of mythology and kick-ass art in a unique style.

Yes, I have read some. No, I have not gotten very far, so please don't spoil. Thank you.

Fables first, then Sandman, because they're easier to track down at my library. And, y'know, I have no time.

Sorry, forgot to do that stuff about spoiler alert..
That's okay, I just glanced at it. The bigger problem is sometimes I end up spoiling things for myself (although, I choose to blame TVTropes).
