The Da Vinci Code

Book Discussion
There can't be a better book than this. Right?

Ugh, Dan Brown. Just because they're cunningly written so there's a cliffhanger at the end of every chapter doesn't make them good books. They're all the bloody same, too... look at who the main bad guy turns out to be in each book.

I like the book though. It's quite clever.
Don't convert me Sentynel. I've already lost most of my beliefs. :P

I'm not a fan. The books are okay for a first read through of a couple, but try rereading them and you'll find they've lost everything good now you know what happens. A truly good book survives multiple rereadings (I've reread LotR, h2g2 and Dune more times than I can count).

I like the books, though I agree with Sent. I can't read it multiple times. I preffer Angels & Demons. It's way better but this is way famous & everyone knows why. I heard he is writing a 5th book. Does anyone know anything about it?

"Brown is working on a new novel, called The Solomon Key, which will reportedly take place in Washington D.C., and feature the "secret" society of the Freemasons. An exact release date has not been announced, but the most common media speculation says 2008. Brown's promotional website states that puzzles hidden in the bookjacket of The Da Vinci Code (including two referring to the Kryptos sculpture at CIA Headquarters in Langley, Virginia) give hints about the subject of this novel."

From Christianity to American history.

By the way, mixing Freemasonry with America seems a bit... well... cliched, don't you think? Wasn't it done in that movie with Nicholas Cage?

Edit: I mean, National Treasure?

I think he's been writing the book since before National Treasure was released. =p But never mind that; one of the Sherlock Holmes novels (Valley of Fear) is partly about a Freemason lodge.

National Treasure was HILARIOUS. Propaganda and nationalism enters the 21st century.

Thanks a lot Sent for the info. U r always kind.
I saw National Treasure too but sadly I don't remember much. It was quite a while ago.

I don't think much of that movie.

How many books has Dan Brown written?

Four. Deception Point, Digital Fortress, Angels and Demons and Da Vinci Code.

I like Deception Point, The Da Vinci Code is very overrated in my opinion

Da Vinci code was kind of boring, Angels and Demons was okay, (but annoyingly follows the exact same plotline as it's sequel) I started reading Digital Fortress about a year ago but kinda stalled because it was really boring and suckish and never read Deception Point.

Deception Point and Digital Fortress follow exactly the same plotline as Angels and Demons and Da Vinci Code, don't worry. You're not missing anything. (Actually, I do think Deception Point was the best, so if you haven't read any that's the one to read)

It's a bit harsh to say they all follow the same plot..

They do, though. Sure, the minor details change, but it's exactly the same. Main character stumbles onto secret/mystery, collects small retinue inc. obligatory love interest, follows trail of clues to the shocking truth. The Big Bad Guy, cunningly hidden behind layers of minions, decoys, and suchlike, is always exactly the same person in every book.
Also, please ensure your disbelief is thoroughly and properly suspended before reading, especially if you know anything about the subjects in question (I'm looking at you in particular, Digital Fortress {don't read Digital Fortress, I beg of you}. And you, Deception Point, though that wasn't *quite* as bad as the travesty that is Digital Fortress. Angels and Demons and Da Vinci Code too, but for those it's rather more obvious that everything is made up and Brown isn't even trying to make any sense, thus making special provision to suspend your disbelief is less necessary).
Featuring over-use of a large array of tropes, included but not limited to (WARNING: Links may contain spoilers for everything ever and high risk of Three Hours of Fascinated Clicking syndrome) the Ancient Conspiracy, Beethoven Was An Alien Spy, and the Linked List Clue Methodology.

While we're on the subject, here's the entry at the same site for The Inheritance Trilogy. Fantastic stuff.

I kinda liked Angels and Demons. I dunno I know they all basically follow the same plots, but AaD was more exciting. I liked Deception Point best, actually. I was a fan, when I first read Aad. but it grew suckish and now Dan has a sequel to Angels and Davinci code. "The Lost Symbol" meh. I won't be surprised if it follows the same plot AGAIN.

oh and I always hate the endings. every book has a very grossly romantic ending. ugh
May Ra and Starclan be with you!!!

There's also the Lost Symbol.

But I loved Deception Point more than any of the others, except I thought it was kind of rude that half the story takes place in Canada, but the only Canadian in the whole story was the geologist who dies in the beginning.

Oh, spoilers, sorry.
I, by strange coincidence, am actually writing a 20 page essay on the Da Vinci Code now.
