Again, doubt that.
History would have said Hitler "persuaded" the Jews to leave, had ol' Adolf won.
Gladstone strong-armed 'em.

Nah. NO history would be more accurate.

I completely failed to get anything out of that.

I agree with this. It's Gladstone's version of a bulletproof vest for the era.
Though it would look weird if it also protects the front too.

Some djinni shoots a Detonation, and the cloak just bounces it back....
It might have been a talisman, or it might have been merely a cloak-a greatly ceremonial one, but no less a cloak. Makepeace was very "ambitous" ie so full of himself he killed the government and absorbed a high spirit (ove rmarid level). He would have attached great symoblism to being dressed like Gladstone while wielding his power.
"I am Bartimaeus! I am Sakhr al-Jinni, N'gorso the Mighty and the Serpent of Silver Plumes! I have rebuilt the walls of Uruk, Karnak and Prague. I have spoken with Solomon. I have run with the buffalo fathers of the plains. I have watched over Old Zimbabwe till the stones fell and the jackals fed on its people."

I've thought of that, but Gladstone imbued power in nearly everything around him.
You'll notice, if you re-examine it, that the two items Makepeace said were 'worthless' to Kitty were the Staff and the Cloak.
The former leveled walls, the latter's gotta be something.

Makepeace probably wanted the cloak for bragging rights, he's *such* a showman =p

Just my opinion.
This seems reasonable. Gladstone would not need a charm, who would argue with someone with a staff that can blow down walls? No wonder he was made Prime Minister! :leader:

My theory is that it actually DOESN'T have any power, but he grouped the item of no power with the Staff to make it seem like the staff had even less power.
PUNCTUATION SAVES LIVES!
Let's eat, Grandma!
Let's eat Grandma!
Has anyone bothered to ask Stroud about the cloak yet?
haha righttttt

I think not. I ran a search in that answered questions section and nothing came up. But I don't think that the search is all too reliable.
It is that or going through seven pages of questions.

Just fixed* a search related bug that meant if you were trying to search it specific forums, it wasn't working.

hi there
It still shows nothing for "cloak".
Thanks for fixing it.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. He made a much bigger deal out of the cloak than the Staff, mentioning the Staff only as an undertone, and since they knew the cloak was powerless they would assume the Staff was too. Though how nobody picked up on it AT ALL, I simply do not understand. I suppose the massive magic aura of everything together must have made it tricky for them...

And I bet he picked the cloak as his chosen downplay item rather than anything else because he probably wanted to wear it, on stage, or while he was doing something big and megalomaniac-ish.

N.B. It wasn't just Makepeace trying to make Kitty not realise the significance of the Staff, it was Stroud doing the same to us. We're suckers, aren't we?

I think he was downgrading the staff to, but stanly says 'it ALL has power even the cloak!' so it does something, but he says 'even' so maybe its one of the cheaper things. We can explain away him not mentioning the staffs radiance as being an idiot. I can add it to my list of questions if he ever gets to them if you guys are really curious

You know actually, I think I might've worked out why Stanley didn't notice that the Staff was more powerful. What kind of levels of power was he used to detecting? Mouler glasses, stuff like that. Most of the things the Resistance had in their little storeroom were very low level. So when Stanley runs into something as powerful as Gladstone's little hoard, the aura must have been massive! No wonder he could barely distinguish one power source from the next.

Quite possibly he missed it for, to quote Good Omens, "the same reason people stood in Trafalgar Square can't see England".
