The commoners know about the spirits. thanks to the resilience, many can see them, or by working with magicians have heard about them. Magicians dont really try to hide 'em. Using them in armies, in books, in plays, and to do there chores probably also helped to awaken comeners to their precence.

I don't think that the commoners knew any of the magician's power was from the spirits. They knew that magicians could control them, but not that they were the true power source.
