It would be randomly assigned.
Exceptions: People who get automatic spots by default are athletes or students in which something arises in which they cannot be in school for a time, like illness or something. Preferences can also be assigned based on a note explaining why that would logically be best for the student. (Extended vacations, religious observations, and the like.);For athletes at first I was thinking their attendance should be around their school time, but now that I think about it being off for their most intense points in their games is better. That way there's less excuse for the dumb jock to not pass. :P Though if they opt for school and practices that would be okay, since some will inevitably throw a hissy fit over vacations I suppose.
As for many people's first choice being Summer, that's a logical observation. Though it really does show society's masochism for the sake of old routine. Spring and fall have much better whether. Though I personally would pick winter for extended skiing practice without interruptions. ^-^

*A lot my comparisons will be in relation to how we do it in Texas specifically. I tried to cut that out, but sometimes I can't help it. So apologies in advance if I cause any confusions.
Yesh, I have to admit. This is the part I'm a bit shady on and need more thought development in.
The easiest way would most likely have only one class offered per season.
Since there's time cramps, each class would have to have more content in it so realistically under this system students can only take 2-4 classes at a time. I like this idea because it gives one time to think about what they're doing truly seriously, without distractions from other subjects. History would especially benefit because of more time and less blind memorization and more in the analysis of considering sources and cause and effect scenarios and all. For science classes this would be especially great, since there could be extended lab times.
[Yesh, I understand many would not be pleased at that. Math and foreign language (due to their subject being the one that is based on being a 'step up' from the previous course) would be required back to back until graduations requirements are met. (Which I suppose might be considered hell, but hey under at least Texas Graduation requirements you would be done with all math requirements in by sophomore year and foreign language requirements by freshman. So if you hate those subjects so long and flooping 'eck all...at least until uni. But let's not think about that.) Not that a person has to do those chunk of classes right away freshman year, though it would be mandatory they finish it at some point. Extra curricular would be best for the enthusiasts who really, really love their chosen subject and want to 'maintain' it. But hey it's always been that way for any field. (Especially Speech and Debate, such an awesome club :) ) ]
Alternatively, there could be a system. The more 'core' classes will take up two chunks of seasons while the 'still required, but smaller semester-type courses' (yesh, I know, I'm comparing to my own system here) could be one season. To fill a year-round course, 2/3 of the student populace qualifies at one time plus so that shouldn't be too much of a problem. Thus a universally required course like English will always have the four options of: winter/spring, spring/summer, summer/fall, fall/winter. In that case, something like 4-5 year round classes can be taken at one time, and semester ones can be stuck in somewhere.
Sample...
Winter Algebra, Physics, Speech
Spring Algebra, English, Physics, Geography, Spanish
Summer English, Geography, Spanish, Art
So all in all, working out the kinks, but plausible. Well, at least until you factor in those pesky things such as AP tests/GSCEs/A-Levels that like to chunk in exams all towards late/spring early summer ( or at least I'm pretty sure that's how it is, if not I apologize British people.)

I can proudly say I did. It has been floating around in my head at random times for a while (usually when I'm not paying attention in class. :P) Though this is the first time I've ever expressed it.

Why thank you. :)
