Badminton is tennis but with a shuttlecock instead of a ball.

Which makes the game very different, as a shuttle behaves very, very differently to a tennis ball.

Pff, they both fly through the air when they're struck.

So does a football, or even a fencing foil, but that doesn't make them the same. :p

I am intrigued. How does a shuttlecock differ from a tennis ball (besides its shape)?

It's a lot lighter and has higher relative drag, Compared to a tennis ball, it leaves the racket faster and slows down much faster, meaning it takes a much more arcing trajectory. It also doesn't bounce. As a result, badminton has a much smaller court than tennis, is a faster game, and relies more on agility than strength.

DC, Why do you ask questions that have even the slightest possibility of starting physics rants?
:p

I prefer badminton to tennis. You can move your wrist in badminton without potentially spraining it.

I prefer badminton too...strange considering I'm a fat git who's about as agile as a beached whale....

Less running around than in tennis? You can play badminton casually barely moving from the middle of the court. It's only if you're playing competitively you have to start moving lots, quickly. Bit harder to do that in tennis.

Nero: cos badminton is more fun!

The annoying part about tennis is that you can't just smash it.

Whereas, under the right circumstances, just smashing it works exceptionally well in badminton. Muahaha.

That makes it go out of the ring though.

You have to do it right. You want it to get as close to the top of the net as possible. If you're close to the net, smash it down over it; if you're further away you're aiming to smash it hard enough that it goes past your opponent but still lands inside the court. It's definitely possible, though a good opponent's going to avoid giving you shots close to the net at the right height to smash down, because they're almost impossible to return.

Shanahan got fired...
Apollo's probably the only one who would understand the significance, but a Denver without Shanahan is just... weird.

Trust Sent to mix physics & badminton!

I prefer tennis to badminton solely because of the reasons you have given Sent. You got to run a lot more & thus get more exercise. It's a hard game.

Yeah I usually prefer Tennis, but if I'm lazy, Badminton works.
We've played both in PE this year.
